Gaels win OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship, Smail named MVP

(From Brock Badgers) - The Queen's Gaels delivered a commanding performance at the OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship, outscoring their opponents 77-11 en route to a fifth Patterson Cup.

Gold Medal Game: Queen's 15 - Ontario Tech 4

Avenging their 2023 championship loss to the Western Mustangs, the Gaels controlled the pace of play from start to finish, defeating the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 15-4 in the gold medal game.

"This feeling never gets old," said Queen's head coach Mike Watson. "For us, losing last year was a tough pill to swallow. The final didn't go the way we wanted to when we hosted at home, so it was nice to turn it around this year and get redemption."

Queen's was led by Abby Lee who finished with four goals and two assists. For Ontario Tech, Jailyn Joensen was their leading scorer with a hat trick.

Five different players scored for the Gaels as they held a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Gaels expanded their advantage in the second frame as they notched five more compared to just one from the Ridgebacks.

The second half continued to go in the Gaels' favour as they outscored the Ridgebacks 5-1.

Queen's defence helped lock down any chance of a comeback as they held Ontario Tech to a scoreless fourth quarter.

As the final whistle blew, the Gaels stormed the field, celebrating their fifth OUA title in program history.

Much like the rest of their games this tournament, the Gaels used a balanced scoring attack to great effect. This time around, 10 different players found the scoresheet.

"We have a lot of senior athletes and a lot of depth on offence and firepower," Watson added. "It's nice to see everyone come through. We're getting goals from not just so one or two players, so it's great to see many players contributing."

For the Ridgebacks, this silver medal is the first medal in program history, with their previous highest finish coming in 2014 and 2019 when they finished fourth.

"The performance this weekend from start to finish was a testament to the teamwork, dedication and resilience of the whole team," said Ontario Tech head coach Liane Chornobay. "Winning a medal for the first time in program history is a dream realized for this group and all the teams that have come before them."

Bronze Medal Game: Trent 9 - Toronto 11

The Toronto Varsity Blues won their first OUA medal since 2017 with a 11-9 victory over the Trent Excalibur in the bronze medal game.

"Our team set a goal to win a medal this year. We had some ups and downs during the season, but we really came together as a group that really cares about each other," said Varsity Blues head coach Jesse Porter. "They were able to follow through on their goal and that means more than anything to us."

Keira Gowan led the way for the Varsity Blues with four goals, while on the other side, Natalie Fournier tied Gowan's goal total with four of her own for the Excalibur.

In the first 15 minutes, both teams came out firing as they scored three goals apiece.

Gowan notched all three of Toronto's goals in the second quarter as they took a 6-5 halftime lead. The Excalibur had Fournier earn both of their scores in the frame.

Toronto extended their advantage in the third quarter as Holly Bureau scored two of their three goals. The Excalibur only managed one from Fournier as they saw themselves down 9-6.

In a furious comeback attempt, the Excalibur scored two goals late in the quarter, but it was not enough as the previously built cushion by the Varsity Blues allowed them to hold on for the victory.

"We have played Trent many times over the last couple of years and to be able to step up and recognize our potential in those crucial games is meaningful for us," Porter added.

With the win, the Varsity Blues earned redemption after falling short 15-4 in last year's bronze medal game to this same Trent Excalibur team.
