Gaels this Week: Men’s Hockey takes on RMC in crosstown home-and-home series

KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb. 24, 2022) – Men's Hockey and Men's and Women's Volleyball will all stay in town over the weekend for home-and-home series, Men's and Women's Basketball are on the road for doubleheaders, Women's Hockey had a schedule change, and Women's Curling and Nordic Ski will compete in their respective OUA Championships.

Queen's Men's Hockey

The Gaels are taking on the RMC Paladins in a crosstown home-and-home series, visiting RMC Friday at 7 p.m. at Constantine Arena before hosting the Paladins Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Centre.

It will be the fifth and sixth meeting of the year and start of four consecutive matchups between Queen's and RMC. The Gaels (No. 5) lead the season series 4-0, having outscored the Paladins 19-6 through the first four meetings.

Queen's forward Holden Katzalay (West Vancouver, B.C.) has led the way with five goals and five assists against RMC this season, while Jonathan Yantsis (Markham, Ont.) and Matthew Needham (Penticton, Ont.) have one goal and six assists each against the Paladins and Josh Curtis (Winnipeg, Man.) has three goals and two assists in the crosstown series.

The four Gaels also lead the OUA in scoring. Yantsis tops the scoring charts with 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) in 13 games, followed by Katzalay with 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 13 games, Curtis with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 10 games, and Needham with 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in seven games.

Queen's (11-1-1) is coming off a 5-4 shootout win over the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay, Ont. last weekend. The Paladins (1-10-4) are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks this past Tuesday.

Queen's Women's Hockey

Women's Hockey announced a schedule change on Thursday. Games against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (Friday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Centre and Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in Oshawa, Ont.) have been postponed in accordance with COVID-19 protocols. The Gaels will instead host the Rams Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Centre.

The Gaels haven't played since a doubleheader against Nipissing in North Bay in early February after their doubleheader against the Rams last weekend was canceled. Queen's is 1-6-1 heading into Friday's game, eight points behind the Rams (4-5-0-1), who sit in third place in the OUA East. 

Queen's Women's Volleyball

Winners of four of their last five games, the Gaels will look to keep their late season momentum with a pair of games against the Paladins. Queen's will host RMC Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the ARC before traveling crosstown to visit the Paladins Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Gaels (No. 10) are coming off straight sets wins over the Lakers (25-18, 25-16, 25-19) and Trent Excalibur (25-19, 25-13, 25-17) last weekend at the ARC to improve their record to 6-2 and jump into the U SPORTS Top 10. Queen's will enter this weekend's games tied for third in the OUA East Division behind the Toronto Varsity Blues (8-0) and York Lions (7-1). RMC (0-8) is coming off a loss to the Lakers last weekend.

Queen's Men's Volleyball

The Gaels will look to keep pace in the OUA East Division standings as they take on the Paladins in a home-and-home series as well. Queen's will host RMC Friday at 8 p.m. at the ARC and visit the Paladins for a game Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Gaels (No. 5) handed the Lakers their first defeat of the season (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) last weekend at the ARC to improve their record to 6-1. Queen's is a half-game behind the Lakers (7-1) and Varsity Blues (7-1) in the OUA East Division standings. RMC is coming off a loss to Nipissing last weekend.

Men's Basketball

The Gaels return to the court after a midweek win over Ontario Tech with a doubleheader against the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay. Queen's will take on the Lakers Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m.

The Gaels' 91-68 win over the Ridgebacks Tuesday in Oshawa, Ont. improved their record to 6-2 on the season. Queen's is third in the OUA East Division standings behind the Carleton Ravens (9-0) and Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-1). After having last weekend off, Queen's (No. 8) fell one spot in the U SPORTS Top 10.

The Lakers (4-6) split their series with the Laurentian Voyageurs last weekend.

Women's Basketball

The Gaels will play their second and third games of the week when they visit the Lakers for a doubleheader. Queen's will face Nipissing Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Gaels (No. 10) are coming off a 74-49 win over Ontario Tech Tuesday in Oshawa, which improved their record to 5-3. Queen's will enter this weekend's games fifth in the OUA East Division standings but with games in hand on the fourth-place Laurentian Voyageurs (6-4).

Nipissing (1-9) dropped both their games to Laurentian last weekend.

Varsity Clubs

Queen's Women's Curling and Nordic Ski will compete in their respective OUA Championships this weekend.

Women's Curling will be in Waterloo, Ont. for the OUA Championship, hosted by the University of Waterloo, from Friday to Sunday.

Nordic Ski will be in Sudbury, Ont. for the OUA Championship, hosted by Laurentian University, from Friday to Sunday.
