Queen's Football beats Laurier to secure second seed heading into OUA Playoffs

Queen's Football defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 30-11 Saturday in Waterloo, Ont. to finish the OUA regular season with a 7-1 record and secure the No. 2 seed heading into the playoffs.

Queen's and Laurier were locked into a tight battle for the first three quarters until Queen's pulled away in the fourth on their way to the 19-point win.

Tyler Mullan (North Bay, Ont.) opened the scoring for Queen's midway though the first quarter with a 19-yard field goal and Queen's would carry a 3-2 lead into the second quarter after surrendering just a safety to the Golden Hawks late in the first quarter.

Alex Vreeken (Kingston, Ont.), who finished the game 15-26 for 220 yards, increased Queen's lead in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run.

Mullan's second field goal of the game, this one a 27-yarder, gave Queen's a 13-2 lead at half time.

The Golden Hawks would claw back in the third quarter, scoring their lone touchdown of the game and adding another safety, to pull within two points of Queen's heading into the fourth.

But touchdown runs by running backs Jared Chisari (Naples, NH) and Anthony Soles (Pointe Claire, Que.) helped Queen's pull away for the win.

Chisari led Queen's in rushing with 10 carries for 98 yards and the touchdown.

Nathan Falconi (Palgrave, Ont.) was Queen's top receiver, eclipsing the 100-yard mark by recording six receptions for 102 yards.

On defence, Queen's was led by Liam Sutherland (Ottawa, Ont.), who had his second strong performance, finishing with a team-high six tackles, and Van Wishart (Courtice, Ont.) who recorded a game-high three sacks in the win.

Darien Newell (Brampton, Ont.) also recorded a sack while Sterling Seunarine (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded an interception for Queen's.

Mullan was 3-3 in field goal attempts to finish the season with an incredible 100 per cent field goal percentage.

Queen's Football will open the OUA playoffs next weekend at Richardson Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 29.
