Queen's alumni William Jones, Ali ten Hove compete in sailing at Tokyo Olympics

Queen's University alumnus and former Gaels student-athlete William Jones competed with Team Canada in sailing at the Tokyo Olympics in the men's skiff - 49er event, finishing with a best result of 12th in two of the 12 races.

Jones (Jerseyville, Ont.), along with his crewmate Evan DePaul, finished 12th out of 19 teams in Race 6 and Race 9. The two also had a 13th place finish in Race 10.

Jones did not advance to the medal race where Great Britain's team of Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell won the gold medal, followed by Germany's team of Erik Heil and Thomas Ploesell taking home the silver medal, and New Zealand's Peter Burling and Blair Tuke capturing the bronze medal.

Jones was part of the Queen's varsity sailing club from the 2013-14 season to the 2016-17 season and helped capture the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association (CICSA) National Championship in every season he competed. He competed in keelboat, fleet racing, and team racing, helping Queen's win multiple keelboat and fleet racing championships, and the Canadian Sailing Triple Crown (fleet racing, team racing, and big boats) in 2015-16.

Jones was named the CICSA Male Skipper of the Year and won the Student Yachting World Cup in his final season in 2016-17.

Queen's alumna Ali ten Hove also competed in sailing for Team Canada at the Olympics, in the women's skiff - 49er FX event.

ten Hove (Kingston, Ont.) and crewmate Mariah Millen finished with a best result of fourth in Race 9 of the 12-race event. The team had three top-10 finishes in the 21-team field, adding seventh in Race 2 and 10th in Race 7.

The two did not qualify for the medal race, where Argentina's Victoria Travascio and Maria Sol Branz won the gold medal, followed by Norway's Helene Nasee and Marie Roenningen taking home the silver medal, and Brazil's Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze capturing the bronze medal.

ten Hove trained with the varsity sailing club and graduated from Queen's in 2019.
