Seven players from the Queen's Women's Rugby team were named OUA All-Stars for the 2021 season.
The OUA unveiled their
Major Award winners and All-Stars for the 2021 season on Wednesday, with
Sophie de Goede,
Carmen Izyk,
Jaden Walker, Maddy Kushner,
Chloe Daniels, Gill Reason, and
Bridget Peros being named All-Stars for the Shiels Division.
"That speaks to our team and without a total team effort, those athletes aren't put into those positions that they're put in, in order to go in and do the things they do," said
Dan Valley, Head Coach, Women's Rugby. "They're all incredibly talented student-athletes and they work so hard at their craft so to see them get recognized in this way is really nice, really rewarding.
"It's cool to see Chloe get recognized in her first year and in that same breath, you see Jill Reason get recognized in her fifth-year and that's just a testament to the work she's put in. She has truly done everything right in her career as a Gael, from the time in the weight room in the off-season and sticking around Kingston in the summers to train and improve. Just being all in. It's really cool and I'm super happy for her.
"Then you get players like Jaden and Carmen who are just innately talented, but again work so hard. They do the stuff that nobody sees. They put in the extra effort, they're just incredibly gritty and incredibly hard-working. To see them get that recognition, it's incredibly well-deserved.
"But in that same breath, we could have had 15 (All-Stars). It's super cool for them to get the individual recognition, there's a huge team component to that as well."
de Goede (Victoria, B.C.), who was also named the Shiels Division Player of the Year for the third straight time, earned her fourth All-Star nod after finishing the season with 52 points, bringing her career total at Queen's up to 208 points. 2021 was de Goede's second-highest scoring season with the Gaels, behind only her 2019 season when she scored 76 points.
Izyk (Blackie, Alta.) and Walker (Oakville, Ont.) were named All-Stars at Back Three. The two tied for the team lead in tries this season with five each. Izyk was named an OUA Shiels Division All-Star and a Second Team U SPORTS All-Canadian in 2019.
Both All-Star nods at the Centre position went to Queen's with
Chloe Daniels and Kushner earning the nods.
Daniels (Sutton, Ont.), who's older sister Hannah also plays for the Gaels, was also named the OUA Shiels Division Rookie of the Year after finishing the season with four tries.
Kushner (Ottawa, Ont.) finished the season with two tries.
Reason (London, Ont.) was named an All-Star at Prop and Peros (Oakville, Ont.) was named an All-Star at Scrum Half. Peros, who finished the season with one try, was also named an OUA Shiels Division All-Star in 2019.
