GUELPH, Ont. (January 8th, 2020) – The Queen's Gaels (7-10-1) dropped a tough 8-2 decision in a rematch of last years Queen's Cup to the Guelph Gryphons (11-4-4) on Wednesday night in OUA men's hockey action.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels opened up the 2020 portion of their season as the visited the Guelph Gryphons for the first time since defeating them 4-1 during the Queen's Cup back in March.
The first period began with an early goal from the Gryphons. The two teams then exchanged power play opportunities and Guelph found the back of the net once again to go up by two with 3:19 remaining in the first period.
Throughout the opening ten minutes of the second period, the Gaels defence held the Gryphons offence scoreless and with under twelve minutes left in the second, Queen's found themselves in their third five on four advantage of the night but were unable to capitalize. Guelph followed by scoring their third goal of the night on a power play of their own.
Following two more goals, the Gaels would find themselves staring at a 5-0 deficit heading into the final intermission Wednesday night.
It wasn't all bad for the Gaels as
Alex Row would give the Gaels fanbase watching on OUA.tv something to cheer about as he was able to prevent the Gryphons shutout, scoring his first of the year with fourteen minutes left in the last period. Following the Gaels first goal by Row,
Graeme Brown scored one of his own increasing the Gaels comeback chances making it 7-2 with under seven minutes remaining in the third period.
The two goals scored by the Gaels in the third ultimately wouldn't be enough as the Gryphons would end the night taking the Queen's Cup rematch 8-2 in Guelph.
