Maxwell and Howard take golds at 2019 Canadian University and College Championships

MARKHAM, Ont. (March 4, 2019) - Three athletes represented Queen's at the 2019 University and College Squash Championships as Sydney Maxwell compete in the women's open division, Chris Howard in the men's A division and Cameron Meakin in the men's B division.

Maxwell was the number one player on the women's squash team, this year's OUA champions for the fifth consecutive year and took home both OUA MVP and Rookie of the Year honours earlier this season.

Maxwell played in the Women's Open division in a pool of eight players from across Canada. Following her quarter-final and semifinal wins, Sydney advanced to the finals against Anika Alexander, from Red River College. It was a close, tense contest with Maxwell dropping the first game and then taking the next three to win the championship. The fourth game was a nail-biter as well with Alexander taking a 10-8 lead before Maxwell came back to win 14-12.

Howard played in the men's A division consisting of a pool of six players. The competition was a round-robin format with each player required to play each of the others in the pool.

Howard managed to win all of his matches to carry him to the A division championship. His toughest competition came against Andrew Milum, the number one player on the Laurier men's squash team. Howard dropped the first game but then took charge in convincing style by winning the next three games to close out the match. This result ends Howard's rookie season at Queen's on a high note, capping the silver medal he helped the team achieve at the OUA Championships.

Queen's final contestant, Cameron Meakin, played in the men's B division which also consisted of a six-player round-robin pool. Meakin won his first four matches to set up the final against the other undefeated player, Eric Rogers from Ryerson. It was a close and hard-fought affair but Meakin ended up losing to Rogers 3-0 giving him a silver medal.
