KINGSTON, Ont. (March 27, 2019) –
Nadia Popov of the women's rugby team and
Slater Doggett of the men's hockey team were named the top student-athletes for the 2018-19 season. The two athletes were announced winners at the 83rd annual Colour Awards Varsity Team athletic banquet Wednesday night at the ARC Main Gym.
Popov, this year's PHE '55 Alumnae Award winner, finishes her career having been both a U SPORTS All-Canadian and Championship All-Star.
2019 Jenkins Recipient - Slater Doggett
The fourth-year Gael came into Queen's in 2012 claiming OUA rookie of the year honours and was named the Alfie Pierce recipient for the Gaels top female rookie. After taking time off to train with the national women's sevens program where she would win a Pan Am gold medal, Popov returned to the Gaels for her final three seasons where she was named an OUA All-Star on two occasions. In her last two seasons, she has helped Queen's to a pair of OUA silver medals and U SPORTS championship appearances. Her impact off of the field is extensive as she is a mental health activist writing for CBC on her own struggles with mental illness, a One Team Ambassador for the Canadian Olympic Committee, a You Can Play board member for Eastern Canada and a Get Real executive member at Queen's.
Doggett, the Jenkins Trophy recipient for the top male senior student-athlete, helped lead the Gaels to their first Queen's Cup OUA championship since 1981 this season.
In his final season as a Gael Doggett was named a 2nd Team U SPORTS All-Canadian and also skated for the U SPORTS All-Stars in December as they challenged the Canadian National Junior program in an exhibition series. The OUA East MVP and Randy Gregg Recipient for academics, athletics and community service, Doggett is a three-time OUA All-Star and was an All-Rookie in his first season. In 2017 he suited up for Canada at the FISU games in Kazakhstan and skated away with a bronze medal for his country. Earlier this week Doggett was signed by the Carolina Hurricanes NHL farm team in Florida and is playing professionally as the ECHL team closes out their season. He leaves the Gaels with an OUA gold and silver medal and two U SPORTS national championship appearances.
With many standout performances by individual athletes in 2018-19, the Outstanding Performance of the Year (OPY) honour was awarded to Gavin Stone of rowing.
Stone had a phenomenal season for the Gaels rowing program picking up a national gold at the Canadian University Rowing Championship and also added a pair of gold medals at the OUA Championship where he was also named the male athlete of the year and OUA All-Star. The men's team finished with a third overall showing at the OUA championship. Stone also competed as a member of the Canadian U23 team and was second overall at the Canadian National Rowing championships where he topped former Olympic medalists and current senior national members. With his sights set on the Olympics in 2020, Stone has been training at the Rowing Canada Aviron National Training Centre.
The Alfie Pierce Trophy recipients for top male and female rookie of the year were Brogan MacDougall from women's cross country and
Justin Fazio from men's hockey.
MacDougall was a dominant force on the cross country scene in Canada this season. She was the U SPORTS MVP and Rookie of the Year helping her team to a national silver and took home OUA MVP and Rookie of the Year honours as the Gaels won the OUA championship title. She finished in first place at the Paul Short Run and became the first U SPORTS runner to ever win the NCAA event. He successes saw her win the Canadian national U20 race and be chosen to represent the Canadian U20 team internationally.
Fazio joined the Gaels for his rookie season after spending time at the Detriot Red Wings training camp prior to the season. He never looked back once he sported the Tricolour leading the OUA in save percentage, finishing fifth in wins and being honoured as both an OUA All-Star and All-Rookie team member. In the OUA playoffs, he finished 7-1 as the Gaels won the OUA championship for the first time since 1981 and earned a spot at the U SPORTS national championship.
The future is bright for both MacDougall, Fazio and the Gaels.
The Jim Tait Trophy is presented annually to the top performing Varsity Team. The award was presented Wednesday night to the Queen's Cup champion men's hockey team.
It was a historic performance from the Gaels as they rose to the top of OUA hockey for the first time since 1981.
The Tricolour were Queen's Cup champions after an 18-10-0 regular season and OUA playoff run of 7-1 while also qualifying for the national championship. They knocked off the top teams in the East and downed Guelph 4-1 to claim the OUA banner.
Slater Doggett received a pair of OUA major awards and joined
Spencer Abraham and
Justin Fazio as OUA All-Stars. Doggett also was named a 2nd Team U SPORTS All-Canadian. Captain
Spencer Abraham made history as well by surpassing the Queen's record for points by a defenceman in a career in his final regular season game. The team also did their part in the community volunteering with the Autism Mentorship Program, minor hockey teams, Nighlight Kingston and their Hockey Gives Blood game.
The Michael J. Rodden Award was given out during the event Wednesday night. First presented in 1978 by the Queen's University Council on Athletics "To Honour the Person, and his Life in Sports," it is awarded for generous support and goodwill towards the Queen's University Athletic Programs. This year's recipient is Janean Sergeant.
The Queen's Special Recognition Award was given out during the event Wednesday. This year's recipients, Doug Jeffries, Ian MacAlpine and Bill Miklas were honoured as media members who are valued partners of Queen's Athletics.
