The Gaels kick off their 2019-20 season with a road matchup against the Laurentian Voyageurs on October 4.Â
The Gaels men's hockey team will look to repeat as Queen's Cup champions, as the Tricolour won the OUA Championship last season for the first time in 38 years. The Gaels defeated the Guelph Gryphons 4-1 in the Queen's Cup championship game in front of a sell-out crowd of 2,800 fans at the Kingston Memorial Centre.Â
To repeat as OUA Champions, Gaels head coach Brett Gibson will have to work around the departures of Slater Doggett, Spencer Abraham, and Justin Fazio all key to the team's run in 2018.Â
On offence, the Gaels will be led by forwards Mason Kohn, Jared Bethune, and Jaden Lindo.Â
Queen's will also look upon Jaden Lindo to have another stellar season. Despite only playing in 12 games due to injury last year, Lindo played a crucial role in the team's championship run, scoring five playoff goals, including two in the final and was named game MVP in Queen's Cup victory over Guelph. As a third-year forward Lindo is also a veteran leader on the team.Â
Kohn and Bethune return for their sophomore season with the Gaels. Last season, Kohn scored nine goals and added 13 assists for 22 points in 19 games. Bethune scored three goals and 12 assists. Bethune had a huge impact during the playoffs scoring four goals and the duo will look to pick up the pace offensively.
The Gaels are without departing OUA East MVPÂ Doggett who finished third in the conference with 21 goals, Abraham last season's captain and an important presence on the Queen's blueline, and goaltender Fazio who led the OUA in save percentage (.936) and was named a First Team All-Rookie and Second Team OUA All-Star and made 50 saves in the OUA Championship final. Abraham will step into an Assistant Coach role with the Gaels this season.
Former Kitchener Rangers goaltender Luke Richardson joins the Gaels this season. Richardson posted a 3.52 GAA in 50 games for the Rangers last season.Â
Third-year defenceman Patrick Sanvido, this year's captain, leads the Gaels blueline. Sanvido recorded four goals and seven assists for 11 points last season and has played in every game in his Gaels career.Â
Head Coach Brett Gibson returns for his 14th season behind the bench for the Queen's Gaels with the goal of repeating as OUA Champions. Gibson tied the Gaels franchise record in wins last season with 19, a mark that he initially set in the 2017-18 season. This past offseason, Gibson served as head coach of Canada's National Men's Under-18 Team at the 2019 IIHF U18 World Championship.Â
Head Coach Quote: "We are very excited about the upcoming season and the challenge the gruelling OUA schedule presents. The 28 games determine who gets the opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize of the Queen's Cup hence there are no nights off. We have a brand new group of players who I feel can come together and be a real threat throughout the year."
