The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team open their 2019 season on the road against the Nipissing Lakers on October 25. You can catch all the action this season on OUA.tv. For tickets to all home games head to gogaelsgo.com/tickets.
It's a transitional year for the Queen's Gaels as former assistant head coach James Bambury assumes the top job on an interim basis following the retirement of longtime head coach Dave Wilson, who previously led the Gaels for the past 38 years.Â
On the court, the Gaels enter the 2019-20 season with the departure of their 2018 top scorer Marianne Alarie. Alarie ranked fifth in the OUA with 15.8 points per game last season. The Gaels will also be without former players Veronkia Lavergne and Maddie Morris, who averaged 12.9 ppg and 7.9 ppg respectively. Â
Returning players Sophie de Goede, Emma Ritcey,
Laura Donovan, and
Myriam Fontaine will all play a key role in the Gaels success in 2019.Â
Two-sport star forward de Goede returns for her third season at Queen's. de Goede averaged 10.6 rebounds per game in 13 games last season, which would've have been second best in the conference if de Goede had played in the necessary 60% of team games to qualify.Â
de Goede had her best game for Queen's with a career-high 21 rebound performance in the Gaels 74-70 victory over No. 8 Carleton.Â
Gaels guard Emma Ritcey started in all but one game in 2018, leading the Gaels with 3.8 assists per game the sixth-highest mark in the OUA. As a rookie, Laura Donovan came off the bench playing in 22 games averaging 5.5 ppg and Emma Weltz averaged 4.1 points per game. The duo will be looked upon as offensive threats this season.
Myriam Fontaine returns for her fifth season with the Gaels. Fontaine had her best season with Queen's in 2018 achieving career-high in ppg (6.7), free throw pct (77.1), field goal pct (51.9) and minutes (15.6).
Quote From Head Coach:Â
"We see our team as one of the deepest in recent memory. Our athleticism, length and competitions will provide an exciting brand of basketball. We will be looking to play fast while stretching the floor due to our ability to shoot the 3 from every position on the floor. Our goal for the season is to dictate tempo and pace of play while defending with an intensity that should create transition opportunities" - James BamburyÂ
James Bambury enters his first season as interim head coach taking over for Dave Wilson. Bambury joined Queen's women's basketball program as an assistant coach in 2012.Â
