KINGSTON, Ont. (October 21, 2019) - The Gaels women's lacrosse team earned silver at the OUA Championships in Oshawa, women's ultimate got a CUUC silver medal, the Gaels field hockey team played in action this weekend in Toronto and squash team participated in the first Jesters East Sectional of the season at McGill University.
Women's Lacrosse
The Gaels headed to Ontario Tech for a quarter final match up against the McMaster Marauders on Friday. The Gaels began the game with a lot of possession time, taking an early lead, but McMaster would keep it close. The Gaels had a 5-3 halftime lead. In the second half, the pressure was too much for Marauders, as the Gaels pushed forward to a 12-4 win. Game MVP

Emily Arkell (3G) led the offense.
Saturday's semifinal match up would see the Gaels faceoff against undefeated Western. With a quick three goals to open the game, the Gaels put the Mustangs back on their heels. Queen's defensive pressure created a lot of time on offense for the Gaels and they would take a 9-3 lead into the half. Time on attack would be Queen's ally in the second half. Despite being outscored 4-2, the Gaels kept the ball for the majority of the time and would seal their trip to the gold medal game with an 11-7 win. Offensive leaders included game MVP

For the third consecutive year, the Gaels found themselves playing for gold. Queen's came out with a first quarter lead over Trent, however, Trent battled back in the second and the game was knotted at five going into the half. The Gaels had a tough third quarter and Trent would control the majority of play, scoring three goals to take an 8-5 lead into the fourth quarter. The Gaels had some chances in the final quarter, however, it was not enough to finish the comeback. Trent won with a final score of 10-7. Queen's goals were scored by

Amelia Piccone was the game MVP with a dominant defensive performance.

Ultimate
The men's and women's ultimate teams competed in the Canadian University Ultimate Championships this past weekend in Brampton, Ontario. The Gaels women's team had a strong showing making it all the way to the national championship final. Queen's came up just short falling to Toronto 11-10 in the final. The Gaels earn a national silver medal for their efforts.
The men's team dropped a close semifinal matchup with Ryerson 12-10 and went on to finish fourth after losing the bronze match to Laval.
Field Hockey
Queen's ended their regular season with a triple header in Waterloo. Their first match-up was against the Western Mustangs. The Gaels opened up scoring late in the second quarter with sequential goals from Brooke Ritchie and Jen Bean. After halftime, Queen's remained relentless resulting in a third goal from Abby Beaton on a penalty stroke. In the last few minutes, Western countered with a late goal, but it was too late to change the outcome of the game as Queen's defeated Western 3-1.
In their second match of the day, the Gaels took to the pitch against reigning OUA champions, the York Lions. The Lions came out firing with an early goal, but the Gaels responded in the second quarter with the equalizer, delivered by captain Mairead Corrigan. With end to end play, Queen's battled hard but fell short, conceding two goals in the last 7 minutes as the Gaels loss 3-1.
For the final game of the weekend, Queen's set out to topple the Toronto Varsity Blues from their first place OUA ranking. The Gaels left their hearts on the field, fighting for each 50/50 ball and earning each yard they took. With an outstanding performance by goaltender Claudia Aparicio, the Gaels denied the Blues a goal until late in the fourth quarter but Queen's fell 2-0.
Squash
The Queen's men's squash team participated in the first Jesters East Sectional of the season at McGill University this past weekend. Queen's prevailed over Ottawa 7-0 and over Carleton 5-2, but lost to McGill 5-2. Standouts for Queen's included rookie Stephen Messier and Michael Haffey who both won all three of their matches. The team's next competition is the Jesters Crossover which will be hosted at Queen's on November 2 and 3.
