GAELS THIS WEEK - Women's Hockey battles Guelph on Ice Wolves Day

GAME OF THE WEEK
Women's Hockey

The Gaels (8-5-0-0) are back in action this Saturday to kick-off the second semester with a matchup against the No.10 ranked Guelph Gryphons (7-2-1-1).

It is Kingston Ice Wolves day at the Memorial Centre for the matchup as all Greater Kingston Girls Hockey Association (GKGHA) players and team participants in the Ice Wolves Cup will receive free admission for the afternoon matchup Saturday with puck drop set for 3:30 pm.

This weekend marks the 16th Annual GKGHA Ice Wolves Cup taking place January 4-6 as 88 girls' hockey teams will be in town competing.

The Gaels are coming off a 5-2 loss at Waterloo back in late November but had won their previous two matchups. The Gryphons snapped a two-game losing streak with a pair of late November road victories over both Toronto and Brock.

Both teams boast top goalies in the OUA as the Gaels Makenzy Arsenault sits with an OUA best goal against average of 1.34 while the Gryphons Valerie Lamenta is second with a 1.39 mark.

Tickets are available at gogaelsgo.com/tickets and the game can be streamed live online at OUA.tv.

Men's Hockey
The No.5 Queen's (12-4-0) men's hockey team gets back into gear this week with a special home-and-home matchup against the UOIT Ridgebacks (9-5-3).

Things get started on Friday afternoon at 12:30 pm in Oshawa for a special school day game that pits the Gaels against the Ridgebacks. The two teams will then head to Kingston Saturday for the back end of the home-and-home with the puck-drop set for 7:30 pm at the Memorial Centre.

The Gaels currently sit tied for second in the OUA standings with a game in hand over the Carleton Ravens. UOIT is just three points behind the Gaels sitting in fifth and a weekend sweep would vault them ahead of the Tricolour.

The Gaels goaltending and defence has been a steady presence all year with the netminder duo of Jack Flinn and Justin Fazio holding down the top two save percentage spots in the OUA at 0.943 and 0.941 respectively.

For tickets to Saturday nights game head to gogaelsgo.com/tickets or catch either game live on OUA.tv.

Women's Basketball
The Gaels (7-3) head north this weekend to start off 2019 with games on Friday and Saturday at Laurentian (3-7) and Nipissing (1-9) respectively. Both games are set for 6 pm tip-offs and can be seen live on OUA.tv.

The Gaels are in the midst of a five-game road trip before returning home next weekend. The Gaels have just one win in the first three contests having topped Brock 75-63. The Tricolour closed out 2018 with an 86-66 loss at McMaster.

Marianne Alarie continues to pace the Gaels offensively as she is averaging 20.8 points per game, second best in the conference. The Voyageurs will look to Emily Tinnes who sits fourth in OUA scoring at a 17.1 clip per game. On the boards, Maddie Morris is averaging 8.8 rebounds per game which is third best in the OUA. Both Laurentian and Nipissing are in the bottom half of rebounding per game in the OUA while the Gaels sit fourth.

Men's Basketball
Queen's (6-4) will head north looking for a pair of victories as they visit the Laurentian Voyageurs (5-5) on Friday night and Nipissing Lakers (2-8) on Saturday with both games tipping off for 8 pm. Catch the action live on OUA.tv.

The Gaels closed out 2018 with a thrilling 88-80 overtime victory on the road at McMaster behind a 32 point performance from Tanner Graham. The Gaels sit in fourth place in the OUA East with Laurentian just behind them in fifth.

This weekend's opponents boast strong offensive firepower as Laurentian is led by the reigning U SPORTS player of the year in Kadre Gray who leads the conference averaging 32.4 points per game. Not far off is Marcus Lewis with Nipissing who is holding down an average of 21.1 per game.

As a team, however, the Gaels themselves are tied for third in the OUA allowing just 71.9 points per game. The battle of offence vs defence will be on display each night.

Men's Volleyball
The Gaels head to Toronto this weekend to compete in the 40th annual Excalibur Volleyball Classic hosted by the York Lions.

Queen's gets the exhibition slate started on Friday afternoon taking on Guelph at 4 pm, then face Humber College on Saturday at 6 pm before finishing up on Sunday against Western at 2 pm.
