Gaels offence held quiet in showdown with Ottawa

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 22, 2018) – The No.7 Queen's Gaels (5-2-0) fell to the No.8 Ottawa Gee-Gees (7-1-1) after finding themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 outcome. Despite a strong defensive effort from both sides, it was the Gee-Gees who were able to connect on their opportunities.

GAME FLOW
It was initially a back-and-forth affair as both sides weren't able to get by the opposing defenders.

The Gee-Gees were the first to get on the board as Katherine Bearne scored her fourth of the season of a beautifully placed free kick. She placed the ball by the defending wall and into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Gee-Gees a 1-0 lead right before halftime.

It was much the same story in the second half as the Gaels struggled to create scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, the Gee-Gees ramped up their offensive pressure which didn't allow the Gaels to have any chances to get back into the game.

In the 74th minute, the Gee-Gees earned a penalty shot and were able to take advantage of the opportunity. Thea Abdul Nour scored to give the Gee-Gees a lead that they would never surrender.

GAELS STARS SHUTOUT
It was a quiet day for the Gaels' dynamic duo of Jenny Wolever and Alexandra Doane. The Pair had combined for 11 goals through the teams first six games of the season however they were limited by the Gee-Gees defensive core.

On the season, the Gee-Gees have now only allowed six goals through nine games which is among the OUA's leaders.

BY THE NUMBERS
5 – Gaels goalkeeper Anna Stephenson made five saves despite taking the loss on Saturday afternoon
1 – The Gee-Gees defence kept Jenny Wolever and Alexandra Doane to just one combined shot.
4 – Ottawa had four more corner kicks than Queen's as they held possession of the ball in the Gaels' zone for much of the second half.

UP NEXT
The Gaels will host the Carleton Ravens (4-3-2) tomorrow afternoon at Richardson Stadium. The Gaels will be in tough as much like the Gee-Gees, the Ravens have also allowed just six goals in nine games. Game time is set for 1pm.
