CARLETON PREVIEW
Both teams enter week four coming off momentum-building victories in week three. The Gaels ran away with a 43-7 win at home against the Toronto Varsity Blues, marking the team's first home win of the season. Meanwhile, the Ravens squeaked out a 21-18 win on the road against the Waterloo Warriors. Mike Domagala's 22-yard field goal with eight seconds left prevented Waterloo from completing the 18-3 comeback.
The Gaels' offence ranks second in the conference in total points scored (103), however they have faced two of the bottom-three ranked defences in York and Toronto. This week, they come across a Ravens' defence that allows 21.3 points-per-game and is tied for the conference-lead with seven turnovers.
The Ravens' offence has struggled despite the 2-1 start to their season. They rank ninth in the OUA in yards-per-game with over 75% their offence coming through the air. However, the team has taken advantage of scoring opportunities as Mike Arruda has the third most passing touchdowns in the conference (6).
"It should be a great game, there are many parallels between the two teams and over the years the games have been competitive. Both teams understand the importance of a victory this week and the consequences of a loss," said head coach
Pat Sheahan. "This will be chapter one of a five chapter episode that's going to determine where we end up this season, it's important."
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
WR
Chris Osei-Kusi – Queen's: After a quiet game against Laurier, Osei-Kusi responded with a monster performance against Toronto. His 111 yards on eight receptions was a season high. He'll have a tough matchup this week going up against Carleton's ball-hawk defenders Jonathan Edouard and James McCallum.
RB/KR
Nathan Langley – Queen's: The OUA's special teams player of the week showcased his speed with a 110-yard touchdown return touchdown to open the game against Toronto. The rookie running back will look to continue his impact on the return-game as field-position could play a factor in a potentially low-scoring game.
RB Nathan Carter – Carleton: Carter was the OUA's most dominant rusher last season as he posted 1110 yards to go along with 6 touchdowns. However, this season has been a different story. Through three games he has recorded 232 rushing yards, which is just over 60 yards-per-game lower than his 2017 average. He is still a serious threat to breakout at any moment and the Gaels will need to include him in their defensive scheming.
DL Kene Onyeka – Carleton: Despite being selected 29
th overall in the 2018 CFL Draft by the Redblacks, Onyeka returned to Carleton for another season. In the 2017 season, Onyeka led the conference with 10.5 sacks to go along with a Second-Team All-Canadian honour. This season has been much of the same story. Three sacks through the first three games has him on pace to be among the conference leaders once again.
2017 MATCHUP
The two teams met in the opening week of the 2017 season at Richardson Stadium. It was a low-scoring affair as the Ravens led 12-3 at halftime.
The fans who piled in to Richardson Stadium were in for a wild second-half as the Gaels rallied back to take a 17-12 lead on a pair of touchdown passes to
Matteo Del Brocco.
However, after a Carleton field goal and Mike Arruda's 1-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds to go, the Ravens escaped Richardson Stadium with a victory.
The Gaels will look for revenge this weekend and hope to improve on their 43-12-0 record all-time against Carleton.
