Varsity Club Weekend Recap - Gaels fencing earns 10 medals at Hugh Munby Invitational

Queen's fencing hosted their annual Hugh Munby Invitational Fencing Tournament this past weekend in the Duncan McArthur Hall gymnasium, home of the Queen's University fencing salle. The Invitational was the largest to date, with a record 146 participants and 12 University Clubs invited, as well as a number of local clubs and individual participants. Queen's Fencing had an excellent turnout of 46 fencers and strong finishes in all categories.
 
The recently renamed Hugh Munby Invitational came soon after the recent loss of former head coach Hugh Munby, who passed away in early October. With the community is still feeling the loss of Coach Hugh, who had been with the team since 1985, a moment of silence was observed during the tournament in his honour. While Hugh will be greatly missed, the Queen's team will remember him fondly for his dedication and passion to the sport.
 
Queen's team fenced strongly on both days of the tournament with 10 podium finishes, including near-sweeps of the podium in both the men's and the women's epee events:

Including this outstanding showing from the Queen's Team, including a number of rookies, there were an additional number of strong finishes on both days:

The Queen's team will be training for their next tournament, the RMC Team Competition, being held on Nov. 3-4.
 
Golf
The men's and women's golf teams competed in the OUA Championship last week from Alberton, Ont. The women's team finished second to claim their second consecutive OUA silver medal. They shot a combined +86 which was 14 shots off the leading Toronto but nine ahead of third place Windsor. Jasmine Mussani and Robyn Campbell were named as First Team All-Stars after both tied for fifth in the individual rankings.

On the men's side, the Gaels shot a combined +68 to finish sixth in the standings.

Field Hockey
The Gaels capped off their regular season with two wins and a draw in Montreal, Que. First, they took down the Western Mustangs 4-1. Abby Beaton, Jocelyn Rough, Jen Bean and Rebecca Gray all had goals in the winning effort.

However, the goal scoring would not continue into the next game as the Gaels were held scoreless in a 0-0 draw against Waterloo.

The next day, the Gaels picked up an 8-0 win over the host McGill to end their regular season on a positive note. Jen Bean and Abrie Girgis each had a pair of goals as the Gaels dominated.

Now the team prepares for the upcoming OUA Championship.

Women's Lacrosse
The women's lacrosse team completed an undefeated season as they claimed their first OUA Championship title since 1999.

Baseball
The men's baseball team competed in the OUA Championship this past weekend but finished 1-2 in pool play eliminating them from the tournament.

On day two, the Gaels fell 3-0 to the Laurier Golden Hawks effectively ending their season. Laurier's Christian Hauck threw a complete game one-hitter to surpass the Gaels.

The Golden Hawks ended up winning the OUA Championship on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 10th inning.
