PETERBOROUGH, Ont. (October 21, 2018) – The Queen's women's lacrosse team capped off an undefeated season with an OUA Championship.
After finishing as the runners-up in 2017, the Gaels got their revenge as they earned their first OUA gold medal since 1999.
The Gaels went 3-0 during this weekend's OUA Championship tournament and took down the Laurier Golden Hawks in the gold medal game to bring the OUA championship banner back to Kingston.
The tournament was held in Peterborough, Ont. at the Justin Chiu Stadium at Trent University.
TOURNAMENT FLOW
After finishing the regular season with a 14-0-1 record, the Gaels entered the tournament as the top ranked team in the province.
The Gaels opened their tournament on Friday with a matchup against McMaster. The Marauders had already been in action that day as they won an earlier elimination game against York.
Queen's won their one and only meeting this season over McMaster 11-1 and the story was the same on Friday as the Gaels crusied to a 15-2 win. The Gaels named
Annie Lloyd as the game's MVP as they earned a spot into day two and a meeting with the Toronto Varsity Blues.
In their lone meeting with the Varsity Blues this season, the Gaels earned a 9-6 win in one of their toughest matchups of the season. On Saturday, the Gaels worked their way to a 6-2 lead at the half before tacking on four extra goals in the second half. The 10-2 win was enough for the Gaels to pencil their names into the OUA Championship final.
Kiah Shanks was named as the team's MVP of the semifinal game.
CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
The Gaels met the Laurier Golden Hawks, who took down Brock and Trent for the right to battle Queen's in the final. Laurier proved to be the Gaels toughest opponent in the regular season as the Gaels edged out an 11-10 win in their matchup.
The Golden Hawks got on the board first on Sunday as Kaitlyn Massey scored to give Laurier a 1-0 lead.
Annie Lloyd responded just a minute later to tie the game, followed by
Kiah Shanks shortly after to give the Gaels a 2-1 lead.
The Gaels would outscore the Golden Hawks 4-2 for the remainder of the half as they took a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Laurier kicked off the second half with a quick goal to make the game 6-4, however that is as close as the Gaels would let them get.
The Gaels scored five more goals in the second half to secure the win and the championship banner.
Brittany Schwende had three goals in the championship game meanwhile,
Kiah Shanks,
Annie Lloyd and
Molly Fisher each had two. Alex Fenton and
Jordan Kummer each tacked on a goal as well.
