GAELS THIS WEEK - No.8 Women's Hockey hosts Western Mustangs Sunday afternoon in game of the week

GAME OF THE WEEK
Women's Hockey

The No.8 nationally-ranked women's hockey team hosts the Western Mustangs this Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm in the game of the week. Sunday will also be a Kingston Ice Wolves appreciation game with activities and face painting available for those in attendance.

Before the Gaels take on the Mustangs, they will host the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm.

The women's hockey team was bolstered by a six-point weekend from the OUA leading scorer Katrina Manoukarakis as they defeated then-No.10 Brock 3-0 and fell in overtime to Ryerson last weekend.

Queen's currently sits atop the OUA standings with 36 points on the season.

The Gaels also boast the OUA leader in assists as Clare McKellar has totalled 13 on the season thus far.

In between the pipes, Stephanie Pascal sits second in the OUA in both goals against average (1.29) and save percentage (0.948).

Sunday's game will pit the OUA leading Gaels against the third place Western Mustangs who are looking to climb the standings and earn their way to the U SPORTS Championship that will be hosted at Western in London this year.

Men's Hockey
It`s a big week for the Queen`s men`s hockey team as they will play three games in a span of four days starting Wednesday night.

The Gaels make the trip across the Causeway Wednesday evening at 7 pm for a Carr-Harris Cup tune-up match against the RMC Paladins.

The Gaels then host a pair of contests this weekend as the Nipissing Lakers, and Laurentian Voyageurs make their way to Kingston Friday and Saturday respectively. Puck-drop in each game is set for 7:30 pm at the Memorial Centre.

The Gaels are coming off a rough weekend which saw them take on two nationally ranked opponents in McGill and Concordia. The Gaels were unable to come away with any points but will finish out the season with just one game against a team ahead of them in the standings.

The combined record for the Gaels remaining opponents sits at 36-52-13 (0.421), and they play the OUA East bottom trio of Nipissing, RMC and Laurentian in six of their final eight games.

Veteran Gaels Spencer Abraham (92 gp, 91 pts) and Eric Ming (95 gp, 95 pts) are each closing in on career regular season games played and points marks of 100. Goaltender Kevin Bailie sits at 48 career regular season wins as well.

Women's Volleyball
There is a logjam in the OUA East as only two points separate second through fifth in the standings. The Gaels are currently in second place with a 7-3 record and 14 points. Only four teams will make the playoffs which will leave one of Queen's, York, Toronto and Nipissing on the outside looking in.

With just one game this weekend every point matters for the Gaels. Queen's hosts the winless Trent Excalibur (0-8) on Sunday afternoon at the ARC Main Gym at 1 pm.

Last weekend Queen's saw a win slip away at York after leading 2-0 before falling in five sets 3-2. The Gaels were able to bounce back the following day with a 3-0 victory at Nipissing.

The Gaels were led by the female athlete of the week Shannon Neville as the fifth-year Gael had 13 kills, nine digs, two assists and an ace in the 3-2 loss at York. The next afternoon she finished with 16 kills at an efficiency of 0.433 while adding eight digs and an ace. Her points per set this season now sits at 3.8 which is her best mark in her career.

Men's Volleyball
The Gaels (4-5) host a single match this weekend as the Trent Excalibur (0-7) visit Kingston and the Queen's ARC at 2 pm on Sunday.

The winless Excalibur will be a welcome sight for the Gaels who are looking to snap a four-game winless skid. Last weekend Queen's suffered a pair of road losses 3-2 at York and 3-1 at Nipissing and currently sit tied with Toronto for the final playoff spot in fifth in the OUA East.

The Gaels Markus Trence continues to lead Queen's offensively this season as his 167 kills are currently tops in the OUA and his 76 digs put him second in the conference.

Women's Basketball
It was a difficult weekend at home last Friday and Saturday as the Gaels suffered consecutive losses for the first time all season falling to both Carleton and Ottawa.

This week the now No.9 ranked Gaels (11-3) will be looking to right the ship as they hit the road to Toronto for a two-game swing. The Gaels start off on Friday night at the Ryerson Rams (10-4) at 6 pm then visit the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-9) on Saturday night at 6 pm.

The Gaels will look to fend off the Ryerson Rams who sit just two points behind Queen's in the standings for second in the OUA East. The matchup could prove to be a pivotal one in determining who gets the second place spot and a bye in the first round of OUA playoffs.

On Saturday in Toronto the Gaels will be participating in the Varisty Blues "Think Pink" Shoot for the Cure game as the Varsity Blues look to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and increase breast cancer health awareness on their campus. Queen's will be sporting their pink "Lead The Way" T-Shirts in the pre-game warmups. The Gaels host their Shoot for the Cure game next Saturday at 6 pm at the Queen's ARC as they welcome the Nipssing Lakers to town. Abby Dixon continues to impress defensively this season as the Gaels guard currently leads the OUA in steals with 48. Last weekend against Ottawa she tied her career best with seven steals, a feat she has now accomplished three times in her career.

Men's Basketball
Coming off a big upset over the then No.7 Ottawa Gee-Gees last weekend at the Queen's ARC, the Gaels (9-5) will look to keep their momentum rolling as they visit the Ryerson Rams (9-5) and Toronto Varsity Blues (7-7) this weekend.

The action starts Friday night at Ryerson before the Gaels visit Old Four rivals Toronto on Saturday night. Both games are set for 8 pm tip-offs.

The matchup on Friday could play a significant role in playoff positioning come the end of the season as the Gaels and Rams are currently tied for fourth in the OUA East standings. Seeds three and four in the East will host OUA playoff games in the opening round so a win over the Rams would go a long way to help ensure a home game for Queen's.

After putting up a team-high 13 points and five rebounds against No.1 Carleton last Friday, the 6-11 post, Mike Shoveller finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks while also hitting a pair of three-pointers for the Gaels in the 84-66 win over Ottawa. Shoveller is enjoying the best season of his career establishing career-highs in points at 12.7 per game and rebounds at 7.3 per game.
