Men's Baseball
The Queen's men's baseball team had a pair of double-headers this past weekend, taking on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, and the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday.
Saturday saw the Gaels face off against the Blues in back-to-back games. Queen's won the first game 3-1, but lost the second 9-2. The next day, the Gaels played the Warriors and finished off the day with another win and loss – a 1-0 victory and 3-1 defeat. The Gaels improved to 5-6 for the season.
Queen's pitcher
Will Langford had a historic performance, throwing a no-hitter in the Queen's victory against the Waterloo Warriors. The 6'2 right-hander allowed just one runner past second base across nine innings and struck out 13 batters while not allowing a single hit. Langford stands as the only pitcher in Queen's baseball history to achieve such a feat.
Up next, the Gaels will host the Brock Badgers at 12pm on Saturday at Megaffin Park.
Women's Lacrosse
The Queen's women's lacrosse team made their way to Oshawa this weekend to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues and the Trent Excalibur.
The Gaels started out strong against the Blues on Saturday with an early lead that held until the half. The tricolour went on a run to make the score 10-6. Despite a late push from Toronto, Queen's held on to win the game 12-10. Rookie Kiah Shanks led the Gaels with 4 goals, with veteran players
Sam French adding 3 more to the scoreboard and
Alexa Fenton with 2 goals.
Next up, the Gaels took on the Trent Excalibur who entered play with a 22-game undefeated streak since last season. Queen's came out to an early lead, getting up 4-1, but Trent eventually took the lead 6-5 going into the half. The Gaels responded in the second half with 5 unanswered goals to push to a final score of 11-7. Shanks was an offensive force for the tricolour, adding another 4 goals to top her 8-goal weekend. Captain
AJ Lockhard and Amelia Piccone added a pair of goals each in the victory. The wins bumped the Gaels into first place in the East standings.
Up next, Queen's will hit the road as they travel to Guelph to take on the Gryphons.
Women's Field Hockey
Hosting the OUA teams on their home turf, the Queen's Gaels Field Hockey Team came out strong during their three games this weekend. Losing to the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 in pre-season, the Gaels were ready to attack from the opening whistle on Saturday morning. In the first half of play, dominant freshman Caleigh Patterson forced the ball into the back of the net putting the Gaels on the scoreboard. After 1-1 tie at half, rookie Jacinta Mallon took the opportunity to drive one past the Warriors goalie. Even though the Warriors managed to score in the finishing minutes, the Gaels pushed through to tie Waterloo 2-2.
In game two of the day for the Gaels, the Western Mustangs came out aggressive in the first half. After the Mustangs scored two back to back goals, Coach
Rachelle Seguin regrouped the team during halftime. In a high-intensity second half, the Queen's Gaels dominated possession. Battling the heat of the afternoon, the calm and collected Queen's defense allowed for many more scoring opportunities for the Gaels. In the 54th minute of play, powerhouse forward Jacinta Mallon scored her second goal of the day, firing the ball past the Western Goalie. Although the Gaels persisted through to the end, the Mustangs took the win 2-1.
On day two of the weekend, the Gaels were set on defeating the Guelph Gryphons after losing to them 1-0 in the final minutes the previous weekend. Patiently defending and attacking with speed, the Queen's Gaels came out hungry. Stepping up and intercepting many Gryphon balls, the Gaels were searching for a goal going into the second half with the score tied at 0-0. With her aggressive and agile goal tending skills, Amanda Thoo's leadership led to a shootout tie against the Gryphons.
Up next, the Gaels field hockey team will take on York, the University of Toronto, and McGill in Toronto next weekend.
Men's Water Polo
The men's water polo team opened their 2017 season with a statement performance at the Carleton pool Saturday finishing 1-1 on the day.
The first game of the day was against the host Ravens and 2016 OUA silver medalists. The Ravens led 6-2 at the half, but the Gaels came out strong in the second to close the margin. Full time saw an 8-5 victory for the Ravens.
The second game of the day saw a 13-4 victory for the dominant Gaels over Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Leading Queen's was the all-star goalie duo of Trevor Robinson and
Andrew Helt. Gaels captain Alex Cox-Twardowski dominated the tricolour offense, scoring 7 goals.
Hendrick Fang added another 6 for Queen's.
Women's Water Polo
The Queen's women's water polo team also travelled to Ottawa as part of their NCWP circuit.
The Gaels first game culminated in a 10-8 loss to the veteran Ottawa Gee-Gees team. Despite the loss, the game proved a good test for the majority rookie starting line for Queen's. Leading the scoring was second-year playmaker
Caitlin Neapole with 3 goals.
The tricolour played Carleton next and suffered a 10-4 loss to the Ravens. Multiple Gaels players picked up single goals, but the standout performance was Queen's captain Jess Schnabel in goal. Schnabel made over a dozen saves for the Gaels and picked up one assist.
Next up for both the men's and women's water polo teams is the University of Toronto's Fall Classic on
Saturday.
