GAELS THIS WEEK – Men’s Rugby hosts Western in Game of the Week

GAME OF THE WEEK
Men's Rugby
The Queen's men's rugby team (3-0) will look to continue their perfect season when they take on the visiting rival Western Mustangs (2-1) at Nixon Field on Saturday at 3 pm.

Following their home opener victory against the RMC Paladins, the Gaels will battle it out with the Mustangs to retain their undefeated streak.

Since the season has begun, Queen's has been dominant in the OUA, scoring 174 points and only conceding 7 – a record that has the Gaels sitting at the top of conference standings.

Both teams head into Saturday fresh off a win. Last week, Western defeated Waterloo 29-8. Despite boasting the superior record entering to contest, Western found themselves down early to Waterloo as the Warriors converted on a penalty kick within the first ten minutes to earn a 3-0 lead to start the match. A scoring drought from both sides saw a 10-3 score at the half. However, the Mustangs came out strong in the second half and were able to push the margin to a 21 point triumph over the Warriors.

Like their opponents, Queen's also enjoyed a victory last weekend when they hosted the RMC Paladins. Joshua Engelbrecht (Oakville, Ont.) got the Gaels on the scoreboard with a pair of early tries first, followed by two successful conversions from Dylan Young (Toronto). From there, Kainoa Lloyd (Mississauga, Ont.) added two of his three tries and Alex Pipchuk (Calgary) was able to break through the RMC defence pacing the field from half for a try. Heading into the first half Queen's was out in front 40-0. In the second half, the Gaels kept the pressure on with three tries in a 10-minute span capped off with Lloyd touching down his third of the day. At the final whistle, the Gaels came out over RMC 62-0.

While the Gaels hold first in the OUA with 15 points, the Mustangs trail by just four points for fourth place.

The last time these two teams met was during the OUA semi-finals when Queen's defeated Western in a thrilling last-minute victory.

Angus MacPhail (Vancouver, B.C.) burst through the Western line with a run down the centre of the field, bulldozing a Western defender along the way to putting the ball in Mustang territory. Still trailing by three in the last minute of play, the Gaels were able to work together and pound their way through the Western defenders on their goal line. After several Gaels inched the ball from the 10 yards out all the way to the goal line, Young scooped up the ball and tucked between the posts and punch Queen's ticket the gold medal game next weekend. After Young also hit the conversion, the final whistle blew with the Gaels ahead 28-24.

The Gaels will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season in Sudbury last weekend. Despite seven shots on goal, Queen's fell 2-0 to the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Coming into the Ridgebacks match up, the Gaels will be out for redemption. These two teams met four times last season – twice during the regular season, once during the OUA Championship, and finally during the U SPORTS bronze medal game – four matches that UOIT defeated Queen's by just one goal margins.

Following the UOIT game, Queen's will have a quick turnaround and host the Trent Excalibur on Sunday at 1 pm.

Admission to all regular season games is free.

Since that performance, the women's cross country team has been ranked No.1 in the country.

On the men's side, No. 6 Queen's saw fifth and sixth place finishes from Brett Crowley and Mitchell Kirat. Queen's also had the 8-10 finishes - a strong showing that merited a sixth national ranking for the Gaels.
