GAELS THIS WEEK – Queen’s Volleyball hosts Guelph in Games of the Week, Men’s Rugby hosts OUA Championship

GAMES OF THE WEEK
Women's Volleyball
The Gaels women's volleyball team (2-1) will return to home court when they host the Guelph Gryphons (0-4) at the ARC Friday night. Game time is set for 6pm.

After suffering a straight sets 3-0 loss to York last Sunday, Queen's will look to bounce back against the winless Gryphons. Last season saw a five-set match against Guelph that had Queen's out on top with a 3-2 victory with scores 22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 13-25 and 15-13.

Look for Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) to boost the Gaels attack. The fifth-year hitter leads the Tricolour with 26 kills.

Following the Guelph match up, the Tricolour will have a quick turnaround and host the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night at 6pm.

Men's Volleyball
The Queen's men's volleyball team (1-1) opened their season last weekend with a 3-2 home opener win over the Nipissing Lakers. Riding a high coming into Saturday's match up against York, the Gaels suffered a heartbreaking loss in a hard-fought five-set match against the York Lions (3-0). The scores of each set were 25-21, 15-25, 31-29, 22-25 and 20-18.

Looking to this weekend, the men's volleyball squad will look to recover and secure a victory over the visiting Guelph Gryphons on Friday night. Game time is set for 8pm.

Last year, Guelph took the Gaels to five sets that fell in the Gryphon's favour with 29-31, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, and 15-6 scores.

The Queen's Gaels will host the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday following their Guelph match up. Saturday will also see an 8pm game time.

Admission for students is free. For tickets, head to www.gogaelsgo.com/tickets. Watch Friday and Saturday's women's and men's volleyball fixtures live on OUA.tv at 6pm/8pm.

OUA CHAMPIONSHIP
Men's Rugby

Closing out a perfect 8-0 regular season, the undefeated Gaels pushed passed the fourth-seeded Laurier with a 54-7 semifinal victory last weekend. The win secured the sixth consecutive OUA championship game for the Queen's men's rugby squad. The Gaels will host the Guelph Gryphons on home turf for the OUA title on Saturday. Game time is set for 1pm.

Although the Gaels 'Drive for Five' consecutive OUA titles was halted by the Gryphons last season, the men's rugby team has earned the most titles in OUA history – a feat accomplished during their 2015 season when they surpassed Toronto with 22 Turner trophy wins.

In a gold medal rematch fixture, the Gaels enter play against the Gryphons out for redemption. Last year, the Gaels and Gryphons battled to the bitter end for gold. It took three extra halves and two rounds of penalty kicks, but the Gryphons defeated Queen's in thrilling fashion to hoist the Turner Trophy as OUA champions for the first time since 1998.

While the Gaels lost the championship to Guelph last year, they came out on top more recently during a regular season fixture. Hosting the Gryphons on Nixon Field, the Gaels defeated their rivals 34-26 on the day.

Look for Alex Colborne (London, Ont.) to be an offensive force for Queen's against Guelph. The third year centre tallied 9 points against them this season and has dominated the OUA leaderboard with 5 tries, 27 conversions and 1 penalty goal.

Admission to rugby is free. Can't make it to the game? Watch it live at 1pm Saturday on OUA.tv.

Women's Basketball
It's a road trip for the nationally ranked No. 10 Queen's women's basketball team (3-0) who will head to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. this Friday to take on the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-4). The Gaels will look to continue their perfect season with a triumph up north. Tip-off is set for 6pm.

The Queen's Gaels come off stellar performances last weekend where they secured back-to-back wins. Most notable of the weekend was the 18-1 fourth quarter run that secured the 90-79 win over the nationally ranked No. 5 McMaster Marauders. Gaels post Veronika Lavergne (Ottawa) netted 29 points and 9 rebounds.

With momentum on their side, the strong squad will push for another victory during their first road trip of the regular season.

Watch the game live at 6pm Friday on OUA.tv.

Men's Basketball
Joining the women's side, the Queen's men's basketball team (2-1) will also hit the road to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. Friday to battle the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-4). Tip-off is set for 8pm.

The Gaels will look to bounce back against the Thunderbirds after dropping a tough 91-86 decision to the No.2 nationally-ranked Brock Badgers on home court last weekend.

The last time out, the Tricolour defeated Algoma 85-77 during the regular season on home court.

Look for post Mike Shoveller (Arnprior, Ont.) to have another big game in the paint for Queen's. Shoveller put up 31 points and 8 blocks during the Gaels 99-87 decision over McMaster last weekend.

Watch the game live at 8pm Friday on OUA.tv.

Men's Hockey
The Queen's men's hockey team (4-2-2) will make their way to Oshawa to square up against the UOIT Ridgebacks (2-5-1) on Friday. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.

The Friday fixture marks the second time the Gaels have encountered the Ridgebacks this season. Queen's defeated UOIT 4-0 this season already during their home opener weekend. On the day, Darcy Greenaway (Kingston, Ont.) notched a pair of goals.

Following Friday's match up, the Gaels will return to home ice to take on the Carleton Ravens Saturday night at 7:30pm. The Ravens hold two spots above Queen's in the Eastern conference with a 6-1-1 record.

Watch the Friday and Saturday games live on OUA.tv at 7:30pm.

Women's Hockey
The nationally ranked No.10 Queen's women's hockey team (6-0-1) are headed to Windsor this weekend to face off against the Windsor Lancers (0-0-0-6) on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 4pm.

Keeping their win streak alive, the Gaels enter play fresh off of an epic comeback victory, while the Windsor Lancers have yet to secure a win this season.

Last weekend, the Tricolour mounted a stellar comeback in the final minutes of regulation and overtime to beat the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-0-2-1). Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) scored twice for the Gaels, including the overtime winner for a 4-3 victory.

From Windsor, the Queen's women's hockey team will make their way to London on Sunday to take on the Western Mustangs (3-1-1-1). Sunday's game will see a 3pm puck drop.

While the Gaels hold the OUA's top spot with 18 points, Western trails in second place with 12 points and one less game played than Queen's.

U SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cross Country
Last week, the Queen's women's cross country program officially ran the table at No.1 holding the top spot in the national rankings for the duration of the season.

The Gaels claimed the OUA championship in women's cross country and saw Branna MacDougall (Kingston, Ont.) take first overall. On the men's side, Queen's jumped up one spot to No.6 after the team claimed and OUA bronze medal performance.

As the No.1 and No.6 seeds, the Queen's women's and men's cross country teams will make their way to Victoria, B.C. for the U SPORTS cross-country championships. The women's 8km race is set for a 1pm start time on Sunday, followed by a 2pm start time for the men's side.
