KINGSTON, Ont. (October 11, 2017) - Following back-to-back wins, the Queen's Gaels (2-4) will look to extend their win streak when they host the visiting York Lions (1-5) for Homecoming football action at Richardson Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 1 pm and the game can be seen live on CHCH and OUA.tv.
The Gaels enter homecoming weekend with a 2-4 record on the year but have won their past two straight games in their push for a playoff spot deep into the season. Queen's picked up their first road victory with a 54-10 win at Windsor and continued to roll when they returned to Richardson Stadium for their first home victory of the season last week.
It was a Thursday Night Lights affair that had the Gaels shining their brightest this season. Queen's toppled the visiting Waterloo Warriors 68-17 thanks to a four-touchdown night from running back
Jake Puskas.
Named the U SPORTS Football Offensive Football Player of the Week, Puskas ran his third consecutive 100+ yard game on the ground. Physical, fearless and powerful, the Gaels running back collected 175 rushing yards and 57 passing yards for a total of 233 all-purpose yards. Retuning to Queen's turf, look for Puskas to have another big performance against York.
Comparatively, York enters the Homecoming matchup against Queen's fresh off a 53-31 loss to the No.5 nationally-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks during their home season finale. The Lions are sitting at 1-5 with their lone victory of the season coming over Toronto 41-16.
The Homecoming game marks the 18
th meeting between these two teams. The Gaels have never lost to York in their history as they sweep the all-time series 17-0, dating as far back as 1971.
The last time out, the Gaels survived a scare at York clinching a 33-32 victory in 2015. Then a rookie,
Chris Osei-Kusi picked up a 40-yard punt return for his first career touchdown while
Nate Hobbs connected with Doug Corby on a 104-yard touchdown.
Looking to the Homecoming fixture and beyond, the path to playoffs is within reach for the Gaels.
A win over the Lions would leave Queen's with a matchup against Toronto who is also just 1-5 this season. Queen's would then need help from other teams.
A Waterloo loss this weekend at Ottawa would give the Gaels the tie-breaker having defeated the Warriors last weekend. Guelph (3-3) take on Laurier today and finish at Carleton while the Ravens (2-4) face Toronto today and the Gryphons to close out the season.
For now, the focus for Queen's is securing a victory at Richardson Stadium in front of a charged Homecoming crowd.
Head coach
Pat Sheahan picked up his 97th career regular season and playoffs win at Queen's last Thursday night. He now needs just three wins to reach 100 at Queen's and has passed the 150 mark for career regular season, and playoff wins in U SPORTS.
