GUELPH, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels (0-2) went into Guelph (2-1) to visit the No.10 Gryphons and fell 38-29 to the 2015 Yates Cup Champions. The Gaels despite holding the lead 11-8 at the half were upended in the final two quarters as the Gryphons scored 30 in the second half.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels got off to a strong start in this one thanks in part to
Jonah Pataki (Wallaceburg, Ont.) who established the run early for the Gaels. Pataki swept across the defence and hauled in a short pass from
Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) that he then took 37-yard for the first touchdown of the game putting Queen's up early.
Nick Liberatore (Dartmouth, N.S.) went to work for the Gaels next as the rookie kicker added a single and followed with a 40-yard field goal shortly after putting Queen's in front 11-0 after the first quarter over the No.10 nationally ranked Gryphons.
Guelph's kicker Gabriel Ferraro turned the tables on Liberatore and finished with the only scoring in the second quarter hitting two single points and two field goals cutting the Gaels lead down to just 11-8 heading into the half.
Queen's started out the second half with a bang. Hobbs connected with
Ryan Keays (Bedford, N.S.) who at first bobbled the pass but held on and marched into the end zone from there for a 49-yard score.
Queen's tacked on another field goal, this one from 43-yards out, and held a 21-8 lead.
Guelph took over from there as Brandon Gordon set up the Gryphons with good field position thanks to a 48-yard rush down to the Queen's 27. Palmer-Salmo finished off the drive with a 1-yard score.
The Gaels offence stalled, going two and out on back to back possessions and Guelph took advantage the second time around. Roberts found Bezrunchko on a 29-yard pass as the receiver made an acrobatic catch at the Queen's 13. Gordon put Guelph ahead with a touchdown 22-21.
Hobbs was intercepted on the next drive by Drouillard and Gordon struck again for Guelph with a 6-yard score.
Gaels receiver
Chris Osei-Kusi (Brampton, Ont.) gave the Gaels some late life as he crossed in front of Hobbs and took a handoff 77-yards for a touchdown. A failed two-point conversion kept Guelph ahead 29-27.
Guelph closed out the game a few minutes later intercepting Hobbs for the second time in the afternoon. Roberts hooked up with Bresciani for a 10-yard touchdown. Guelph held on for a 38-29 victory.
