The Gaels women's basketball team will look to make the OUA playoffs for the 20th consecutive season in 2016-17. Queen's starts their regular season on the road at York on November 11 before returning to Kingston for their home opener on November 18 against Laurier.
Â
Last year, the triocolour finished the regular season at 14-5, the fewest losses the team has had since the 2000-01 OUA Championship season, when the Gaels went 15-5. Coming back to the Queen's lineup this year is
Robyn Pearson, an OUA First Team All-Star last year and one of only three players in U Sports to average a double-double, with a nation-high 10.8 rebounds per game to go with 10.0 points per game.
Â
With a balance of seven first and second-year student-athletes and eight veterans on the roster, expectations are high for this year's edition of the Gaels women's basketball team. The leadership group of Pearson,
Emily Hazlett,
Andrea Priamo, and
Abby Dixon are joined by
Myriam Fontaine, a member of last year's All-Rookie Team, and rookies
Bridget Mulholland,
Adriana Conti, and
Emma Ritcey. Queen's will also see the return of 2013-14 CIS Tracy MacLeod Award winner
Gemma Bullard for her final year of eligibility.
Â
Head coach
Dave Wilson returns for his 35th season at the helm of the Gaels women's basketball program. Last year was marked the 18th winning season for Wilson at Queen's. Another great season from the tricolour could push Wilson to his 350th career win.
Â
Quote from the head coach:
"We have assembled our deepest team in many years, with a great balance in perimeter and post play. We will look to use this depth to play an up-tempo and high pressure style of defence, while pushing the pace in transition, to wear down our opponents. It should provide for some very exciting games."
