No. 8 Queen's beats No.5 McGill for first time since 2004 snapping 31 game losing streak

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 26, 2016) – The No. 8 Queen's Gaels (11-4-3) defeated the No. 5 McGill Redmen (11-3-1) 4-0 on Saturday night in a battle of two of the best teams in the nation. With the win, Queen's moves into a tie with both McGill and UQTR for 1st place in the OUA East.

It was a historic night for the Gaels as they were able to snap a 31-game losing streak against McGill that dates back all the way to February 6, 2004 when Queen's won at McGill 5-2. The Gaels last home win over McGill was the the previous meeting to February 6 as Queen's took a 4-3 decision on November 9, 2003 at the Jock Harty Arena.

GAMEFLOW
In the first period, the Gaels came out strong opening the scoring six minutes into the period. Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) scored for the Gaels on a quick snap shot. Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) and Ryan Bloom (Calgary, Alta.) assisted on the play. In spite of a number of chances, this proved to be the only goal of the period, allowing the Gaels to take a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.

The play favoured the Gaels early as they had momentum controlling much of the play and generating quality scoring chances.

Queen's continued to control the momentum in the second period, scoring two powerplay goals to take a 3-0 lead. Ryan Bloom (Calgary) scored the first powerplay goal, tipping in a shot from Doggett. Eric Ming picked up the other assist, his second of the game. After a large scrum, and a number of penalties, the Gaels capitalized for the second time while on the powerplay. Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) scored on a wristshot from the point that hit both the crossbar and the post before finding its way into the net. Nevin Guy (Mountain, Ont.) and Ted Hunt (Toronto) assisted on the play. The strong powerplay works allowed the Gaels to take a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third period the Queen's extended the lead to 4-0. Doggett scored for the Gaels on a top-shelf snapshot. Ming added his third assist of the game on the play and this allowed the Gaels to take a 4-0 final over the visiting McGill Redmen.

Gaels goaltender Jacob Brennan stopped all 27 shots to shutout the Redmen. Brennan was kept busy but proved to be too much for McGill as he had a strong rebound control between the pipes.

FINAL SAY
"Last night was probably our worst performance of the year, and tonight was probably our best performance. Our top players performed, and you need that. I think we out worked them and capitalized on our opportunities. Brennan has been fantastic in net for us, he earned that start. It was a tough call, but Jacob's been incredible every game he's played and deserved the opportunity." - Head Coach Brett Gibson
