Varsity Clubs Update - October 3, 2016

A recap of Queen's Varsity Club action from the past week.

GOLF
September 26

It was another golden day for the Gaels. In a rain-filled day at the York University Invitational, the men's team placed first, tying the Western Mustangs with a team score of 302. This is a 3rd straight gold medal finish for the men's team, and they are on course for a spectacular season. Leading the team for the Gaels were Captain Chris Murray (73, +2) and third year player Ian Wilson (73, +1), who both tied for first place individually. Other men's team scores were: Michael Reaume (79, +8), Trevor Corner (81, +10), and Parker Lobban (77, +6).

The women's team also had a great finish in the rain. With a team total of 252, the Gael's placed third, not far behind the University of Toronto (241) and Western University (250), securing their third medal of the season. Team scores for the women were: Melissa Ramnauth (95, +21), Sierra Singh (91, +17), Jess Levy (87, +13), and Robyn Campbell (74, E). Campbell also secured an individual gold medal finish with her even par round, scoring four shots better than her next competitors.

October 2

With cooperating weather, the men's side had a strong outing at the Waterloo/Laurier Invitational. Led by low individuals Chris Murray (68-72) and Ian Wilson (72-68), the Gaels finished with a -4 total over two days (568), good for second place just two shots back of Laurier. Strong outings from the rest of the team, Michael Reaume (73-69), Jeremy Rose (72-72), and Trevor Corner (74-72), as well as Parker Lobban, Ciaran Sheahan, and Myles Killackey, made this finish possible. This second place finish breaks the 3 tournament win streak for the Gaels, but they are looking to rebound this coming weekend at the University of Toronto invitational.

The Women's team participated in the two-day Waterloo Invitational at Cambridge Golf Club and came away with a fourth place finish against some tough competition. Team scores were: Robyn Campbell (82-81), Jess Levy (91-88), Sierra Singh (91-88), and Stephanie Cheon (97-93). This ends a medal streak for the women, but they are looking forward to great rounds this upcoming weekend at the University of Toronto Invitational.

FIELD HOCKEY (WOMEN'S)
Saturday Oct 1
Won 6 – 0 against McGill

The Gaels won their first game in the OUA season this weekend. In the first two minutes of the game, captain Taylor Herrington scored the first goal of the game shortly followed by another goal by Kate Waslen. In the 19th minute of play on a penalty corner Waslen got her second goal of the game off a rebound. Keeping up the intensity, Leigh Janssen was able to score the fourth goal of the first half. Once the second half started the Gaels did not back down and scored again within the first five minutes from Ciara Morrison. In the last minute of play Abrie Girgis had a penalty flick that got the girls the sixth and final goal of the game.

Sunday Oct 2
Tied 1 – 1 against Waterloo

The second game of the weekend was a frustrating battle for the Gaels. Competing against Waterloo, third year Morrison was able to get one goal in for the team. Unfortunately, the girls were unable to hold off a goal from Waterloo and the game ended with a 1-1 tie.

Lost 4 – 0 against U of T

In the last game of the weekend, Queen's competed against the former OUA champions, U of T. Although the Gaels played hard they were unable to hold off their competitors and lost 4-0. However, first year Rebecca Gray was an instrumental player in the game and was able to control the ball brilliantly under pressure and help the Gaels generate attacks from the midfield.

Looking forward
This week Queen's Field Hockey will be practicing for their away weekend at Waterloo where they will compete against Western and Waterloo.
