Gaels Shutout Brock 40-0 in OUA Home Opener

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 13, 2015) – The Queen's Gaels (1-1) grabbed a 40-0 shutout win in their home opener over the Brock Badgers (0-2) this Sunday afternoon at Nixon Field.

GAME FLOW

The Gaels were quick on the ball, fighting through the Brock defence with Lucas Rumball (Toronto) putting down the first try of the game completed with a conversion by rookie Alex Colborne to give Queen's an early 7-0 lead. The Badgers tried to respond but with a big push from the Gaels, Brock found themselves on the defence for most of the first half.

The Gaels momentum didn't slow down as Teddy Taggart (Ottawa) found an opening off a ruck on the goal line, diving across to score the Gaels another try. With Colborne's second successful conversion of the game the Gaels were up 14-0.  Some crisp lateral passing brought Queen's back into Brock's half again where a lane opened up allowing Will McArthur to put down another try between the goal posts, finished with Colborne adding another conversion. Ryan Aimers (Ottawa) wrapped up the half with a ruck try putting the Gaels comfortably ahead of Brock 28-0.

It was a slow start to the second half with the Badgers fighting to stay in the game and the Gaels refusing to give up any points. Brock couldn't keep Queen's offence from breaking through as the Gaels chalked up tries from Trevor Helgason and Mark Levin (Vancouver) as well as another conversion by Colborne. Queen's rounded out their home opener with a 40-0 win over Brock, which set their pace for the rest of their season following the recent loss to Guelph on Wednesday.

FINAL SAY

"We knew in Guelph it was going to be a tough match so we weren't that worried after the loss. We said before this game we needed to step up and answer for the mistakes made last game. It wasn't perfect, but the end result was we did a lot of things right and the score obviously showed the hard work. Our defense was amazing; we really focused on our defense."
