WATERLOO, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels are in Waterloo in the annual exhibition tournament hosted by the Warriors. The Gaels are joined by Winnipeg, Dalhousie and the hosts with games taking place Tuesday through to Thursday.
Day 1 - Queen's 3, Dalhousie 2Queen's opened up the tournament with a 3-2 win over Dalhousie on Tuesday evening in Waterloo. The Gaels were led by a strong performance from
Mike Tomlinson who threw down 25 kills for the Gaels while adding six digs, six blocks and three service aces. Aiding in the strong attacking performance from Tomlinson was setter
Thomas Ellison who landed at 50 assists for the five set match while also digging up 10 balls himself.
The Gaels got off the a quick start taking the opening two sets, first 25-22 followed by a 25-20 performance at the game looked to be all but over. Dalhousie battled back and finished the third set with a 25-23 win before following up in the fourth with a 25-19 decision to force a fifth and final set. In the end the Gaels were able to find their form and close out the match with a 15-11 win. On Wednesday Queen's will take on Winnipeg at 5pm.
Day 2 - Queen's 1, Winnipeg 3The Winnipeg Wesmen outmatched Queen's on Day 2 as they opened up a quick two sets to none lead with 25-23 and 25-21 decisions. The Gaels fought back in the third set taking it in extra points 26-24 to force the game to a fourth set. The Wesmen proved to be too much for Queen's as they took the final set 25-16 to clinch the 3-1 match.
The Gaels had strong performances from
Thomas Ellison who finished with 46 assists while Tomlinson and
Marko Dakic added 15 kills each in the loss.
Day 3 - Queen's 1, Waterloo 3The Gaels stayed on par with the host Warriors through the first two sets forcing each to extra points but it was Waterloo that was able to take the two sets over Queen's, first 28-26 followed by a 27-25 decision. With the Warriors in complete control up 2-0 the Gaels were able to take the third set 25-17 to keep themselves alive. Another close set in the fourth did not fall the Gaels way as the Warriors closed out the match 26-24.
The Gaels were led by
Tyler Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) who had a strong game from the middle with 20 kills on 27 attempts while adding four digs, three aces and a block.
Dylan Hunt (Aurora, Ont.) had a strong performance with 18 digs and 17 kills for the Gaels as well.
Queen's will return to action when they visit the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton on January 15.
