LONDON, Ont. (November 27, 2015) - Two second period goals and another shutout by
Caitlyn Lahonen lead the Gaels' revenge win over No.4 ranked Mustangs.
Queen's hit the road for their last roadtrip of 2015 and second last game of the calendar year. The Gaels and the Mustangs came into Friday's game tied for second in the league with 24 points. Last weekend the Gaels fell to the Mustangs at home 4-1.
Game FlowThe first period was a tight one as Queen's came out on top in chances and shots on net. Neither team could solve each other's goaltender, and the Gaels were able to kill off the only penalty in the opening frame.
The pace and physicality picked up in the second almost immediately. The Mustangs took three penalties in the period, but the Gaels were unable to convert on their chances. However they didn't need the man advantage to take the lead. 13:37 into the period
Courtenay Jacklin (Regina, Sask.) beat Kelly Campbell to put the visitors up 1-0. After killing off their last penalty of the period, Western continued to be pressed by Queen's, and it was Jacklin scoring once again. Her third marker of the year would give the Gaels a big insurance marker and 2-0 lead in the final minute of the second.
Western continued their physical play and Queen's matched in through the final frame. Each team sent three more players to the sin bin, including a late Too Many Men penalty by the Mustangs that all but sealed the deal. The Gaels shut down the home team's offense most of the night and the third period was no exception.
Caitlyn Lahonen (Saskatoon) turned away the final eight shots she faced and came away with another shutout on the season.
With the 2-0 win, Queen's jumps ahead of Western for second in the OUA and avenges their loss from last Saturday night.
