Gaels This Week – Women’s Hockey season opener at home vs Brock in the Game of the Week on Friday

Gaels This Week – Women's Hockey Hosts Brock in the Game of the Week on Friday.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY
The women's hockey team opens up their season this weekend against the Brock Badgers on Friday night at 7:30pm in the Game of the Week, followed by a game against the York Lions on Saturday night at 7:30pm with both games being played at the Memorial Centre.

The Gaels are coming off of a regular season that saw them finish third in the OUA. They faced off against Laurier in the first round of the OUA playoffs where they lost in back to back games by a single goal with one game ending in the third overtime to be eliminated and end their season. The Gaels 2015-16 campaign outlook looks very strong this year after last season's disappointing end. Queen's will once again be led by Matt Holmberg who is entering his 10th year with the team, and seventh as Head Coach. With a mix of some key veterans and last year's strong rookie class as well as the debut of some highly recruited players this year coming into the hockey program, the Gaels will be looking to add another OUA Championship to their title and advance to the CIS Championships this year held in Calgary.

The visiting Brock Badgers finished last season with a 2-18-4 record which placed them last in the OUA. The Gaels played the Badgers twice last season with Queen's winning both games by the same score of 4-3.

The Gaels women's team will also host York at 7:30pm on Saturday night at the Memorial Centre in their second game of the regular season. In their two games during the 2014-15 season the Gaels won both home and away games, a 5-0 victory at home and 3-2 win at York. The York Lions finished last season with an overall record of 11-10-3 which placed them 10th in the OUA final standings.

WOMEN'S RUGBY
Need to Know: No.3 Ranked team in CIS, Gaels will host CIS Championship Nov.5-8 at Nixon Field.

The No. 3 Queen's Gaels (4-0) will be on the road this weekend when they travel to Guelph to face the No. 2 Gyrphons (4-0) at Varsity Field. The Gaels are currently the top seed in the Russell Division as they face Guelph in their final game of the regular season.

The Gaels enter play this weekend coming off a 41-7 win over the York Lions (2-2) last Friday night. The Gaels were led by Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) who put down three tries in their win. Queen's also had tries from Caitie Ryan (Kamloops, B.C.), Miranda Seifert (Regina), McKinley Hunt (King City, Ont.) and Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.), who also scored three conversion in their victory over York.

No. 2 Guelph enters play this weekend with a 4-0 record which places them first in the Shiels Division. The Gryphons are coming off a 97-0 shutout victory at Waterloo last weekend. The last time Guelph and Queen's met was in an OUA Semi-final playoff match last season when the Gryphons defeated the Gaels 29-21. Guelph eventually lost to McMaster in the OUA Championship game.

Guelph has not lost a regular season game since 2011 when they were defeated 5-3 by McMaster. From the 2008-09 to 2012-13 seasons the Gryphons were OUA Champions for five straight years.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
The women's soccer team will finish off their five game homestand this Friday when they host cross town RMC (1-8) at 5pm at Miklas McCarney Field. Queen's enters this weekend with a 4-2-5 record which places them fifth in the East Division of the OUA.

Last weekend they hosted Ottawa on Saturday where they played to a 0-0 draw. On Sunday they hosted Carleton where they once again finished with a 1-1 draw, the Raven's scored in the last minute to tie up the game.

RMC comes into this match with three straight losses and their 1-8 record places them 9th in the East Division of the OUA. The Paladins and Gaels already met once this season at RMC where Queen's had their biggest victory on the season with a 10-0 shutout. The Gaels that day were led offensively by Rookie Jenny Wolever (Toronto) and Tara Bartram (Vancouver) who both score two goals each. Goalkeepers Madison Tyrell (White Rock) and Michaila Frawley (Victoria) each played a half to split the clean sheet.

The Gaels women's soccer team has just one lost in their last nine games played this season.

MEN'S SOCCER
The men's soccer team returns home this weekend to play cross town RMC (1-8-1) on Friday night at 7:15pm at Miklas McCarney Field. Queen's enters this weekend with a 5-2-3 record which places them fourth in the East Division of the OUA.

Last weekend they were on the road against Nipissing on Saturday where they tied 1-1 against the Lakers with Andrew Martin (Kingston, Ont.) scoring the lone goal for the Gaels. On Sunday the team was in Sudbury playing against Laurentian where the team lost the match 3-2 in the last minutes of the game which snapped a seven game unbeaten streak. Kristian Zanette (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Oliver Coren (Toronto) scored for the Gaels.

RMC comes into this match with a 1-8-1 record on the season which places them 8th in the East Division of the OUA. The Paladins and Gaels last met earlier this season at RMC where Queen's won the game 2-1 with a late penalty kick winner by Zanette.

Queen's striker Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa) has scored six goal on the season which is tied for fifth best in the OUA and seventh best in CIS.

MEN'S HOCKEY
The men's hockey team will be wrapping up their preseason schedule this weekend as they play cross town rival RMC on Friday night at 7pm. This is the last preseason game before the Gaels open up their OUA regular season next weekend against York and Brock on Friday and Saturday night.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The men's volleyball team will also be wrapping up their preseason schedule this weekend as they travel to Quebec to play against Laval on Friday night at 7:30pm and against Cegep Garneau on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. This will be their last preseason games before the Gaels open up their OUA regular season next weekend at RMC on Saturday afternoon.
