Gaels This Week - Football welcomes Ottawa in Game of the Week

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home or how to follow them on the road!

Game of the Week - Queen's Football hosts Ottawa

The No.9 Gaels will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their OUA football home opener this Saturday at Richardson Stadium, game time is set for 1pm. Queen's is coming off of a big road victory over the Windsor Lancers where the Gaels used the wind to their advantage to put up 15 points in the final quarter and take a 39-30 victory.

Quarterback Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) led the way for Queen's as he threw for 259 yards completing 17 of 35 passes for three touchdowns in the win. Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) finished with a strong game on the ground despite missing much of the second half for the Gaels with 93 yards and a touchdown while Doug Corby (Burlington, Ont.) had 125 yards receiving and a touchdown of his own. Michael Moore (Mississauga, Ont.) finished with a game high 12 tackles while rookie defensive back Jason Shamatutu (Coquitlam, B.C.) had a big debut on defence for the Gaels with 7.5 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception late in the fourth.

The Gee-Gees enter the game this Saturday coming off a 51-7 thumping of the York Lions. Quarterback Derek Wendel threw four touchdowns in the win and Vincent Campbell returned a punt 72-yards for a touchdown.

The Gaels are currently a dominant home team and have been for the past few years. The Gaels have won their last 14 straight home games and will look to make it 15 on Saturday.

Women's Soccer

The Gaels play their first game on Miklas-McCarney Field in the women's soccer home opener at noon on Saturday against Laurentian, and play again on Sunday against Nipissing at 11am. Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg) didn't dissapoint in her return to the pitch, as she netted three goals to give Queen's a 6-0 win over RMC. With 50 goals as a Gael, Tessier is just another hattrick away from tying the Queen's career scoring record. The Gaels competition this weekend also have a win each to start the season, with the Voyageurs sitting at 1-0-1 and the Lakers at 1-1-0.

Men's Soccer

Queen's has a mid-week clash against Carleton in the inaugural game on Miklas-McCarney field since its renaming, battling the Ravens at 2pm on Wednesday before hosting Laurentian on Saturday at 2:15pm and Nipissing on Sunday at 1:15pm. The Gaels opened the season on the road against RMC with a 5-0 victory. Laurentian and Nipissing are still looking for their first wins of the season, while Carleton sits at 1-0-1.

Women's Rugby

On the women's side, No. 3 Queen's opens the season at home, battling York at 1pm on Nixon Field. Last year, the Gaels beat York 38-15 in the second week of play en route to winning their first OUA Championship and first CIS medal. Queen's will start their title defense this weekend.

Men's Rugby

The Gaels hit the road to start the 2014 season in men's rugby, travelling to Laurier for their 3pm tilt. Queen's played host to the Golden Hawks in last year's home opener, rolling over their opponent 48-0. The Gaels did not allow a point in their first three games last season, and the team's stingy defense and high-powered offense led them to their second consecutive OUA Championship.
