Gaels fall to Montreal, McGill beats Laurier in a Shootout on final day of Queen's Invitational

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 20, 2014) - The Queen's Gaels welcomed McGill, Montreal and Laurier to the second annual Queen's Invitational hockey tournament September 19 to 21 at the Invista Centre in Kingston. Queen's fell to 2-1-0 after losing 3-0 to Montreal on Sunday, while McGill and Montreal led the tournament with 2-0-1 records. Laurier ended the weekend 0-1-2.

DAY 3 

Laurier vs McGill - BOXSCORE
On the final day of the Queen's Invitational, McGill handed Laurier their third loss of the tournament in a shootout. The Marlets, who finish the tournament with a 2-0-1 record, squandered the Golden Hawks comeback attempts to win 7-6.

Leslie Oles got things started for McGill in the first period on the power play. After the first period, Oles had three points and McGill had a 3-0 lead. Oles extinguished Laurier's comeback attempt in the second period, as she matched Laurier's two goals to complete her hat trick, maintaining McGill's three-goal lead into the final frame.

After the teams traded goals in the third period, Dollee Meigs, who ended the game with a goal and two assists, kick-started Laurier's comeback on the power play to narrow McGill's lead to 6-4. With Megan Howe's goal bringing the Golden Hawks within one, Laura Brooker scored her third goal of the tournament in the final minute of play to send the game to overtime.

A scoreless overtime period led to a shootout, in which Oles, who finished with three goals and three assists was the only skater to find the back of the net.

Brittany Smrke made 27 saves in the win for McGill, while Amanda Smith was in goal for Laurier, stopping 34 shots.

The women's hockey team could not earn a perfect 3-0 tournament record, dropping the final game of the Queen's Invitational 3-0 versus the Montreal Carabins.

The Gaels found themselves trailing 1-0 early in the opening frame after surrendering a power play goal to Montreal's Jessica Cormier. Queen's had a trio of power play opportunities in the period, but could not solve Carabins goaltender Élodie Rousseau Sirois as she turned aside all eight shots that came her way.

Montreal began to generate numerous scoring opportunities in the second period, as they fired nine shots on Gaels goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.). Cormier found the back of the net for her second tally of the game as the period came to a close, giving Montreal a 2-0 lead.

The Carabins began to dominate play in the final period of the game, outshooting the Gaels 9-3. Cormier completed the hat-trick with her second power play goal of the afternoon, and the Carabins went on to earn the 3-0 victory.

Lahonen registered 21 saves for Queen's, while her Montreal counterpart, Rousseau Sirois, earned the 16 save shutout.

The Gaels finished the Queen's Invitational with a 2-1-0 record. Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.), formerly the captain for Laurier, led all Gaels skaters with four points over the weekend.

Lahonen had an impressive tournament in net for Queen's as she accumulated a 0.945 save percentage and 1.67 goals against average.

DAY 2 

Montreal vs Laurier - BOXSCORE
In the first match of day two, interdivisional rivals Laurier and Montreal hit the ice, each in search of their first win. Montreal topped Laurier 5-4 in a shootout.

The tight game was tied four times, with Montreal coming out on top thanks to Ariane Barker's two goals during the shootout. Barker scored as the first shooter, and the sixth shooter, netting Montreal's only goals in the shootout. Barker also finished the game with three assists. Lore Baudrit found the net twice in the third period, while Josianne Legault and Demmie Charlebois had a goal apiece for the Carabins.

Élodie Rousseau Sirois was in goal for Montreal, making 21 saves during the game, and stopping five of the six Laurier skaters in the shootout.

Laurier's Laura Brooker gave the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead in the first period, tied the game 4-4 in the third, and scored her team's only goal in the shootout. After netting her shootout goal as the second skater, Brooker could not convert as the sixth skater to extend the shootout. Robyn Degagne and Katia Piccoli both found the net in the second period, while Haley Baxter and Dollee Meigs each had a pair of assists.

Nicholle Kovach, Laurier's goaltender, made 32 saves and stopped four of the six skaters in the shootout.


Queen's vs McGill - BOXSCORE
The Gaels earned a 3-2 overtime victory in their second game of the Queen's Invitational against the 2014 CIS Champion McGill Martlets. Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.) buried the overtime winner for Queen's, bringing her weekend point total to three. 

The Gaels found themselves trailing McGill 1-0 after surrendering their first power play goal of the tournament to Gabrielle Davidson. Queen's was able to respond less than two minutes later with a power play tally of their own to knot the score 1-1 at the first intermission. Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) registered the goal while Lester and Amber Sealey (Elora, Ont.) were credited with the assists.

Queen's took their first lead near the halfway point of the second period with Courtenay Jacklin's (Regina) second goal of the weekend. Goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) kept McGill off the scoresheet in the period, as she turned aside all nine shots that came her way. 

In the final period of play, Queen's attempted to fend off the Martlet's pressure. McGill had 11 shots in the third period to the Gaels 10, and that extra Martlet shot was enough to force overtime, as Pamela Psihogios found the back of the net with under five minutes remaining.

The Gaels captured the victory three minutes into overtime, when Lester deposited her second game-winning goal of the tournament. Pilon grabbed her second point of the night with the assist. 

Lahonen earned with win in goal for Queen's with 34 saves, while her McGill counterpart, Taylor Hough, made 23 saves.

Queen's will look to earn a perfect 3-0 tournament record tomorrow when they take on the Montreal Carabins at 3:30pm in the final game of the Invitational.


DAY 1

McGill vs Montreal - BOXSCORE

In the opening game of the tournament it was a rematch of both the previous year's CIS and RSEQ championship between the McGill Martletts and Montreal Carabins. 

The two teams went back-and-forth with goals in the first and the second, after no scoring in the third the game went to overtime where Gabrielle Davidson scored to break the deadlock and give McGill the 3-2 win. Montreal captain Janique Duval scored for the Carabins while Brittney Fouracres had a two-point night with two assists in the win for the Martletts. 

Queen's vs Laurier - BOXSCORE
The Gaels women's hockey team earned a 3-0 shutout victory against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night in an OUA Championship series rematch. Former Golden Hawks captain Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.) tallied two points for the Gaels. 
 
Queen's came into their matchup with a chip on their shoulder as they looked to defeat the Laurier team that bested the Gaels in the 2014 OUA Championship series. The Gaels cashed in early with a power play goal scored by former Golden Hawks captain Lester. Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) and Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.) registered assists on the goal. Queen's was able to add to their lead in the final minute of the first period after Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) buried a goal with 52 seconds left to play in the opening frame.
 
The second period was highlighted by terrific goaltending from Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) of the Gaels and Amanda Smith of the Golden Hawks. Both teams failed to convert on the power play with the score remaining 2-0 heading into the third period of play.
 
The Gaels were able to add an insurance marker five minutes into the third when Nadia Larocca (Mississauga, Ont.) found the back of the net on the power play to make it 3-0 in favour of Queen's. Lester was credited with the lone assist as she collected her second point of the night. The Gaels were tested late but did not break as they fended off two Laurier power plays to earn the win. Lahonen was sensational on the night as she collected the 37-save shutout.

Montreal will take on Laurier in tomorrow's 4pm afternoon game followed by McGill taking on the host Queen's Gaels at 7:30pm.
