WATERLOO, Ont. (March 2, 2014) - The No. 8 Queen's Gaels women's hockey team fell 2-0 to the No. 4 Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA Championship deciding game on Sunday night in Waterloo.

In the first period the Gaels came out flying registering the first five shots of the game including a great chance early from Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) who was turned aside by Laurier netminder Amanda Smith. The Golden Hawks turned the table over the second half of the period keeping the puck in the Gaels end but were unable to beat Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) of the Gaels. After the first period the shots 14-13 in favour of Laurier.

In the second period the Golden Hawks broke the game open. Danelle Im pounced on a loose puck that just floated in towards the Gaels goal and Im was able to get enough to put it past Dodd-Moher. Less then a minute later Laurier struck again as Emily Kekewich scored her second of the season at 9:28. The Gaels found themselves with a large gap to make up as they headed to the third period down 2-0.

Despite outshooting Laurier 11-5 in the final period the Gaels were unable to solve Smith. Penalties also slowed any comeback attempt as the Gaels were shorthanded at the start and end of the period. Laurier held on to win the game 2-0 and secure the OUA Championship.

Dodd-Moher finished with 32 saves in the loss for Queen's while Smith stopped all 38 shots she faced for the shutout.

Laurier will now advance to the CIS Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
