No.4 Golden Hawks beat No.8 Gaels 2-0 to force final game of OUA Championship Sunday

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 28, 2014) – The No. 8 Queen's Gaels will meet the No. 4 Laurier Golden Hawks in a deciding game three on Sunday as Laurier took a 2-0 decision in game two of the OUA Championship at the Memorial Centre in Kingston Friday afternoon.

The first period opened up with the Gaels getting the majority of the chances. Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) fired a shot on goal from the slot and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) got a chance at a rebound but Laurier goaltender Amanda Smith turned away each chance.

The Golden Hawks got a few good scoring chances late as they opened up the flow with some cross-ice passes but were unable to beat Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) for Queen's who turned them aside. In the first period the Gaels outshot the Golden Hawks 13 to eight as the game remained scoreless.

Laurier finally broke through in the second as Devon Skeats scored her fifth goal of the playoffs at 8:58. Skeats fired a shot on goal and managed to get her own rebound, which she then tucked past Dodd-Moher to put Laurier ahead 1-0.

Queen's got their first powerplay of the game but once again it was Smith turning aside the Gaels from any scoring opportunities. Laurier got their own powerplay to close out the period but the game stayed 1-0 as they headed to the dressing rooms.

In the third the Gaels were scrambling to beat Smith. Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) had a chance to deflect a point shot past the Laurier goalie but she reached out to the side to keep the puck in front of her.

With only 1:18 left in the game, Jessica Prevette sealed the win for Laurier beating Dodd-Moher after the Gaels could not clear the front of the net.

Smith stopped all 39 shots faced for the shutout for Laurier while Dodd-Moher stopped 25 shots for the Gaels.

Queen's and Laurier will battle for the OUA Championship on Sunday night at 7:30pm in Waterloo. The winner will advance to the CIS Championship hosted by St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N.B. from March 13-16.
