Gaels This Week - Men's Rugby In Search of Third Consecutive OUA Title

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.

Men's Rugby
This Saturday the Gaels host the Guelph Gryphons for the OUA Championship Final at 1pm on Nixon Field in Kingston, as Queen's looks to win the title for the third consecutive year. With a win on Saturday, the Gaels would capture their 21st Turner Trophy, moving into a tie with Toronto for the most provincial rugby championships since the inaugural title was handed out in 1923-24.
Last weekend Queen's claimed a 61-0 shutout victory against the McMaster Marauders in the OUA semi-final match. The Gaels redeemed themselves against the Marauders who handed Queen's their first loss in two years, earlier this season. The Gaels immediately dominated the pitch, with David Williams (Toronto) putting down the first try of the game in the second minute completed with a successful conversion by Adam McQueen (Canmore, Alta.). Queen's had a strong momentum throughout the match, preventing the Marauders from getting close to the Gaels 22 until late in the second half. Kainoa Lloyd (Mississauga, Ont.) was a key player in the game with his strong lateral movement, and also scored two tries for the Gaels, one on a punt from Mark Charette (Ottawa).
Earlier this season the Gaels beat Guelph 33-17 in a close matchup in the Gryphons only loss of the year. Queen's was trailing 17-12 at the half but managed to bounce back in order to get the win. This Saturday will be a big game for Queen's, so come out and support your Gaels in the OUA Final. Admission to Saturday's game will be free, or you can catch it on OUA.tv.

Player to watch: ADAM MCQUEEN     #10     FLY HALF     QUEEN'S

10222

Adam McQueen (Canmore, Alta.) is a player to watch for the Gaels. The clever third year often displays his play-making ability from the fly half position. In just four games played during the regular season, McQueen scored 65 points, thanks in part to his kicking prowess.

Cross Country
This weekend the Gaels are competing in the CIS Championship on Saturday in St.John's, Newfoundland. The women's cross country team move into No.4 in CIS rankings while the men's team slipped out of the rankings this week. At the OUA Championship, Julie-Anne Staehli (Lucknow, Ont.) led the women's team to a fourth place team finish with a bronze medal individual performance. Last year, Staehli was the individual CIS Champion, as Queen's women's team placed third overall. On the men's side, Queen's finished fifth as a team, with Alex Wilkie (Almonte, Ont.) crossing the line in fifth individually as the top Gael.

Women's Basketball
This weekend the No.8 Gaels kick off their regular season with a road trip to Thunder Bay to take on Lakehead Friday at 6pm. Last year, Queen's finished at 16-6, the best regular season record the team has had since 2003-04, when the Gaels also went 16-6. Under 2013-14 OUA East Coach of the Year Dave Wilson, Queen's will look to continue last year's success with a more experienced lineup.

Men's Basketball
This weekend the Gaels kick off their 2014-15 regular season with a road trip to Thunder Bay to take on Lakehead Friday at 8pm. Queen's is coming off their second 10 win season in a row for the first time since 2007-08. A two time all-star, Greg Faulkner is the lone fifth year on the Gaels roster and is charged with leading a talented core group of third years. The team will be relying on its younger players to carry their weight in the upcoming season.

Men's Hockey
This weekend the Gaels head to Ottawa on Friday to play No.9 Carleton at 7pm, and on Saturday Queen's hosts RMC at 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre. Last Friday the Gaels looked to be on the verge of an upset over No.5 UQTR but the Patriotes scored four times in the third to take the 5-3 win over the Gaels. Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) extended his point streak to six games and Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) got the start for the Gaels and finished with 43 saves in a losing effort.  Last Saturday, Queen's answered back with four goals after Concordia grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the second period. Goaltender Chris Clarke (Fall River, N.S.) made his first start of the season for the Gaels, earning the 27-save victory.

Women's Hockey
This weekend the No.4 Gaels are on the road as they play No.8 Guelph on Saturday at 2pm and Brock on Sunday at 2:15pm. Last weekend Queen's ended their five game winning streak, suffering two shootout losses against Nipissing and Laurentian.  Goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels against Nipissing, collecting 18 saves in her first loss of the season. On Sunday, goaltender Stephanie Pascal's (Sudbury, Ont.) shutout streak ended at eight periods but she collected 30 saves in her first loss of the season. Queen's is unbeaten in regulation this season, and looks to continue that trend this weekend.

Women's Volleyball
This weekend the Gaels host RMC on Friday at 6pm and Ottawa on Sunday at 1pm in the ARC. Last weekend Queen's was shutout in three sets by Ryerson on Friday and on Saturday, despite winning the first set, the Gaels were unable to overtake a strong Toronto team. A takeaway performance from the weekend was put on by Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) against the Varsity Blues, who was the only Gael to reach double-digit kills, hitting a game-high 18 balls to the floor and digging 10 Toronto attacks.

Men's Volleyball
This weekend the Gaels travel to Waterloo to take on the Warriors on Saturday at 8pm. Last weekend Queen's was shutout in three sets by the Rams on Friday and on Saturday, they earned a 3-2 win against Toronto with a strong finish in the fifth set. Two highlight performances came from last weekend were Tyler Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) and Markus Trence (Organeville Ont.) against the Varsity Blues. Scheerhoorn killed a team-high of 13 balls and made nine digs in Queen's win, while Trence had a team-high 13 digs and 10 kills for the Gaels.

Men's Lacrosse
The Gaels head to Oshawa, Ontario this weekend to play for the Baggataway Cup and compete to be named CUFLA Champions. Queen's has a quarter-final game on Friday at 9pm against Western. With a win, the Gaels would play McGill, who earned a bye, in the semis. Last year, Queen's had the same matchups and beat Western 12-11 to advance. The Gaels weren't as successful against McGill in last year's semi-final, falling 15-6.
