Varsity Clubs Update - October 14, 2014

A recap of Varsity Club action from the past week.

Golf
Both the men's and women's golf teams competed Friday and Saturday at Angus Glen North Course in the annual U. of T. Invitational. Strong play from both teams earned them medals for their hard work, as the men took gold and the women took bronze. Seasonal fall weather challenged the golfers on Friday, while a Saturday morning frost delay gave way to bright skies later in the day.

Heading into next week's OUA Championship the men's golf team claimed the gold medal and their second victory of the season, capturing gold at the 18 hole Western Invitational. The team posted a 583 total to edge Laurier by 2 strokes. The Gaels have taken over top spot in the team standings.

"This is the first time in 15 years as head coach that the men's team has won a 36 hole event. I am really proud of the players. It really prepared them for the OUA's next week," head coach Bert Kea said.

Russell Bowie won the individual silver with rounds of 72 and a three-under par 69. Bowie now sits tied for second place in the individual all-star points list. Steady play from Jordan Gregoris (72-74) had him in seventh place, and an under par second round by Cameron Lindsay (81-69) elevated him to tied for 13th. Echo Chan (72-80) and Brad Burtch-Thomas (82-74) contributed to the win as well.

On the women's side, the Gaels picked up a bronze medal finishing third behind U. of T. and Waterloo. Like the men, the women now have three medals in the five events of the fall season.

Robyn Campbell came through with a determined second round (88-77) to place ninth over the two days. Jess Levy finished tied for 12th (87-84) and Heather Wogden, who led the Gaels in scoring in round one (84-93) slipped to end tied for 18th. The fourth team member, Sammy Gold (88-90), was tied for 20th out of 35 competitors.

Elliot Fledderus (78-83) and Brandon Lackey (86-78), on the men's side, and Emily Welsh (97-92) along with Alex Rawn (99-91), in the ladies' event, competed as individuals at the tournament.

The OUA Championship will be played October 20-21 at the Oshawa Golf & Curling Club. The Gaels hope to continue their solid play and repeat with medal winning performances.

Lacrosse W
Last season, Laurier eliminated the Gaels from the OUA medal round by squeaking out a victory in the playdowns. This weekend the scales re-balanced as Queens beat the Golden Hawks 13-11, with captain Sarah Utting striking early and often to lead the team wtih four goals.

The second game of the Thanksgiving weekend saw a relatively inexperienced York team, fall 10-3 to a well-balanced Queen's attack.

Fastpitch W
Queen's beat York 18-3 and 15-0 before losing a pair of games to Ottawa on the last weekend of regular season action. The Gaels had their games against Carleton rained out.

Baseball M
The baseball team lost a pair of games to Laurier to finish the 2014-15 regular season.
