BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (January 10, 2014) - The Queen's Gaels (7-4) lost their first home game of the season falling to the Ryerson Rams (4-7) 70-67 on Friday night at the Athletic and Recreation Centre.
Â
The young Rams team was relentless with their aggressive defensive pressure, keeping the Gaels from finding a consistent offensive rhythm within the forty minutes of action. Lead changes were exchanged multiple times throughout the first half, but the teams went into the halftime break tied at 33. The standout player of the first two quarters was Ryerson's Keneca Pingue-Giles who tallied 16 points in 17 minutes of play. She finished the night leading all scorers with 25 points.
Â
The second half was a scrappy battle that ended in the favour of the Rams. Queen's fought hard for loose balls and second chance opportunities, but their 11 for 22 showing from the free-throw line and 21 turnovers in the game did not make their attempt to come back easy. Although the Gaels fell to an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter, Queen's proved they were not going to go down without a fight. With two well executed offensive possessions leading to back to back three pointers by
Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) and
Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.), the Gaels came back within two points with under eight seconds to go. Ryerson sealed the fate of the game with made free-throws and a big offensive board by Silvana Jez in the final seconds, giving Queen's their fourth loss of the season.
Â
Bullard led the Gaels with 14 points on the night, followed by
Robyn Pearson (Toronto) who scored 13 and grabbed nine boards.
Â
The Gaels are back in action on Saturday against the University of Toronto (4-7) at 6pm.
