KINGSTON, Ont. (Septermber 15, 2013) - For the second year in a row the Queen's Gaels cross country men's and women's teams took first place in the team events at the Queen's Invitational held at the Fort Henry Hill course.
On Saturday September 14, the Gaels women's team finished with 15 over all points, while York University placed second with a score of 50. On the men's side, the Gaels took the top spot finishing with 17 points, while York University was the runner up once again with 43.
On the women's side, the 6km race was won by Queen's very own
Julie-Anne Staehli (Lucknow, Ont.) in a time of 21:46.2. Close behind was teammate
Victoria Coates (Newmarket) who finished in 22:00.0 and
Colleen Wilson (Ancaster, Ont.) who came third with a time of 22:15.9. The women swept the top five spots with
Charlotte Dunlap (Ottawa) (22:36.5) and
Veronica Allan (Shallow Lake, Ont.) (22:54.2) coming fourth and fifth. Maria Markova of York University placed first for her team in a time of 23:54.0, while RMC's Michelle Begin-Major lead her team finishing in 25:40.0.
The men's 10km race was won by
Jeff Archer (Kingston, Ont.) of Queen's with the time of 32:08.8. He beat out his teammate
David Cashin (Pembroke, Ont.) by only six seconds, who completed the course in 32:16.7. The Gaels held on to the top three spots with
Tyson Loney (Ottawa) finishing in 32:27.8. York's Esteban Clavijo finished with 33:26.8 placing him fourth in the individual standings. The Gaels were right on his heels as
Alex Hutton (Ottawa) (34:13.1) and
Chris Fitzgibbon (Calgary) (34:14.7) finished in fifth and sixth place. RMC's Pier-Alexandre Lacasse had a strong showing leading his team by finishing in the time of 37:14.3 and thirteenth in the scoring standings.
The Gaels runners are back in action at the Western Invitational next Saturday, September 21.
