Girard pots OT winner as No. 7 Gaels drop No. 9 Mustangs 3-2

BOX SCORE LONDON, Ont. (February 3, 2013) - Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.) continued her scoring touch into Sunday's afternoon match between two top ranked team's in Canada, the No. 7 Gaels and No. 9 Mustangs. Girard potted the overtime winner to give the Gaels a 3-2 win a day after getting the game winner in a 3-0 win over Windsor.

Early in the first period Mary Coughlin (Amhurstburg, Ont.) wristed a shot from the point towards the goal and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) got her stick on it to deflect the puck past the Mustangs netminder Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.) putting the Gaels up 1-0.

Both teams came out firing in the first period with the Gaels firing 18 shots on net to the Mustangs 13. Queen's was defensively sound in the period, shutting down the Mustangs two power plays.

Western was able to even the score at 1-1 in the second period when Casey Rosen (Toronto) scored her fourth goal on the season. The Gaels had two man-advantages in the period but were unable to convert on either attempt.  With 11 shots in the second frame the Gaels were up to a total of 29 after only two periods.

In the third Queen's was able to regain the lead on a power play goal by Coughlin, her fourth of the season. Sydney Cudmore (Oakville, Ont.) added the lone assist on the play. With just over one minute remaining in the third period the Mustangs were able to tie the game and force overtime on a goal from Kryshandra Gree (Caledon, Ont.) her ninth on the year.

In overtime each team had two shots on net, the Gaels were able to convert at the 2:54 mark of overtime when Girard tipped a shot from the right of the slot past a screened Campbell to give the Gaels the win.

Karissa Savage (Calgary) got the win for Queen's stopping 27 of 29 shots, while Campbell finished with 37 saves in the loss. The Gaels special teams continued to be effective going 1-4 on the power play and successfully killing off all seven of the Mustangs power plays.

After completing their four game road swing today the Gaels return home to close out the season. On Friday the team hosts the Waterloo Warriors and Saturday face-off against the No. 4 Laurier Golden Hawks. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Centre in Kingston.
