BOX SCORE AMHERSTVIEW, Ont. (February 11, 2013) - The Gaels (20-4-2) locked up the third spot in the OUA East division with a 2-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors (9-14-3) on Monday afternoon in Amherstview, Ontario. With the win the Gaels set a Queen's women's hockey single season record with their 20th regular season victory topping their previous best of 19 from 2009-10. The Gaels will now take on the number six seeded Windsor Lancers in the first round of the OUA playoffs.

The Gaels had the first real chance of the game when Kristin Smith (Toronto) took a shot from the right face-off dot towards the top corner on the short side but the Waterloo starting netminder Allie Mitchell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) was able to cut off the angle to make the save. The Gaels went to work on the power play mid-way through the period with Taryn Pilon registering her 12th goal of the season. Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) won the faceoff back to Katie Duncan (Waterloo, Ont.) who shot the puck on net and Pilon scooped p the rebound giving the Gaels an early 1-0 lead. The Warriors best chance in the frame came on a three on one rush where Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver, B.C.) elected to shoot instead of pass but the puck sailed high over the Gaels goal.

Waterloo's Carolyn Burke (Mississauga, Ont.) started out the second period with a chance for the Warriors as she broke in on the right wing with a shot but Karissa Savage (Calgary) was out at the top of the blue ice to make an easy save. The Warriors could not find a way to beat Savage in the second despite having three power play opportunities in the frame. The Gaels goaltending and defensive play has been strong all season, Queen's 1.57 goals against average this season is the third best in all of the CIS.

The third period saw the two teams open up more offensively, the Gaels got a good chance early in the period when Pilon centred a hard pass that Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) deflected on net but Mitchell steered it wide. The two teams went back and forth with offensive odd-man rushes for a good two minute stretch as the Warriors applied pressure to tie the game and force overtime. The two goaltenders were up to task as Savage stopped six and Mitchell nine in the period. The Gaels got the insurance goal they needed when Allie Biglieri (Toronto) dug out her own rebound and slid the puck past a sprawled Mitchell to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead. The Warriors managed to break-up the shutout late with a goal from Kelly MacLean but Queen's hung on for the 2-1 win.

Savage made 24 saves for the Gaels for her 10th win of the season. Mitchell stopped 21 of 23 shots faced for the Warriors.

Queen's will now take on the Windsor Lancers in the first round of the OUA playoffs in a best-of-three series.
