Gaels win second fifth set match of weekend

| By:
BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (January 13, 2013) – The Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team (9-2) was in action Sunday afternoon against the Waterloo Warriors (2-11) and found themselves battling from behind to record their second thrilling five set victory of the weekend. Queen's currently sits in third place in the OUA standings.

Saturday's player of the game, Katie Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.), was able to put a solo block into Waterloo floor to get the scoring started for the Gaels. A series of Waterloo errors worked in the Gaels favour and helped the tricolour build a 4-1 lead early.
Waterloo pulled even with the Gaels going on a 4-0 run, led by offside-hitters Kristen Sheffield (North Bay, Ont.) and Clara Tse (Hong Kong). The Gaels front-line was able to regain the lead with a series of three straight blocks, however Waterloo took back the lead with Tse recording three of the Warrior's four kills after the technical timeout . The Gaels climbed back into the set, and eventual drew even, from a Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) service ace. Kelsey Bishop (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Katie Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) combined for a block to give the Gaels the lead. In the final points of the set, Queen's recorded a series of attacking errors followed by two Tse kills that ended the first frame in Waterloo's favour, 25-23.

The Gaels were able to open the second set on a 4-0 run, with fourth-year economics major Katie Neville recording two early service aces. Tse was also efficient serving, and recorded two aces for the Warriors, who were able to pull within one of Queens. This was the closest Waterloo would come, as the Gaels front line was particularly stingy recording three blocks in the set. Bishop was an important factor for the Gaels late in the second set recording a dig on each of the last five rallies. Bishop finished the match with 16 kills, eight digs and an ace.

Queen's was quick to get things started in the third set, going on a 5-1 run early. Back-to-back kills from Bishop along with a series of Waterloo errors allowed the Gaels to build a 12-5 lead mid-way through the set. Queens then gave a few points back to Waterloo on offensive errors, and the two teams proceeded to exchange points until late in the set. Late, with things knotted up at 19, the Gaels were able pull ahead thanks to three Colleen Ogilvie (Calgary) kills. Ogilvie was the game leader in kills with 19, and also led all players in total points with 22. Bishop added two; and Katie Neville, Katie Hagarty and rookie Becky Wilson (Pickering, Ont.) each added a kill to bring Queens a 25-23 set victory.

Three Gaels attacking errors early in the fourth set, along with two Tse kills got the Warriors out of the gate to a 7-0 run. Katie Hagarty was able to shift the momentum in the Gaels favour and help them draw even by recording back-to-back aces along with two timely kills. Bishop and Ogilvie also added two a piece to complete the fourth set comeback. After gaining a late lead as the result of several Warriors errors, the Gaels too found themselves in error trouble allowing Waterloo to close the set out, 25-22—forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set was deadlocked in the early minutes with both teams exchanging points until the five point mark. Domino's 'dominator of the game' Brett Hagarty was the key factor for the Gaels in the final frame recording three kills in a row to cap-off a 5-0 tricolour run. Brett added one more kill, followed by three Ogilvie kills and various Warrior errors to close out the set 15-8 in Queen's favour. The win marks the Gaels second of the winter term, as they remain undefeated in 2013.

The Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team aims to keep improving on their winning record as they visit the Western Mustangs on Saturday. Tip-off is set for noon in London.
