Varsity Clubs Update

BASEBALL: Gaels Baseball was scheduled to play a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. However, Saturday's twin-bill with McMaster was rained out, and will be made up at Megaffin Park on Tuesday, October 2. The skies cleared in time to get in Sunday's pair with the U of T Varsity Blues. The Gaels picked up a split, defeating the Blues 8-6 in the opener, and losing 10-2 in the nightcap. Tyler Whealy pitched two scoreless innings to get the save in the first game, while Joe Metzler drove in the winning runs, capping a five-run fifth inning for Queen's. The Gaels are now 3-7 on the year, tied for seventh in the OUA circuit.
UP NEXT: The Gaels have five games on tap this weekend, all at home. They will host Western for a single game on Friday (7 p.m.), and a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.). On Sunday (1 p.m.), the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks will visit for two games. 

GOLF: Queen's Golf teams traveled to the Western Invitational, played Thursday at the St. Thomas Country Club. The entire field of players saw rain through the majority of their round, and the biting conditions led to scores much higher than what the team had set their sights on. Russell Bowie once again placed in the individual section, tying for 3rd, shooting a hard earned 73. Teammates followed Russell's low number with Taylor Henderson (82), Jordan Gregoris (82), Matt LaRiviere (84), Brandon Lackey (87), and Andrew Rogers (79).
UP NEXT: The Gaels hit the road next weekend to compete in the Waterloo Invitational on Saturday and the Laurier Invitational on Sunday.

FASTPITCH: The Gaels were on the road this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders against Guelph on Saturday and at Toronto on Sunday. On Saturday, Queen's lost both their games to Guelph, the first game ended with a close score of 3-2, while the second game saw them trailing Guelph by two runs in a 5-3 loss. The Gaels turned their weekend around in Toronto, where they got the better of them in both matches. The Gaels won their first game 14-9 and their second game 10-6.
UP NEXT: The Gaels will host a pair of doubleheaders at Garrigan Park next weekend. Queen's will take on the Laurier on Saturday (2 pm) and the Waterloo on Sunday (12 pm).

FIELD HOCKEY: The Gaels had a slow start to their weekend in Toronto this weekend.  On Saturday they fell to Guelph in an 8-0 game. On Sunday the Gaels lost 2-0 to York, the Gaels managed to pull out a 2-0 win against McGill later on Sunday, with Amber Halcovitch scoring the first goal for Queen's in the first half and Natali McGladrey scoring the Gaels their second goal in the second half.
UP NEXT: The Gaels will head to Guelph next weekend where they will meet York on Saturday (2:15 pm) and Waterloo on Sunday (9am).

LACROSSE (M): The Gaels hit the road for their annual Quebec road trip last week, and suffered a pair of heart-breaking losses:  12-11 to the McGill Redmen and 7-6 (OT) to the Bishop's Gaiters. On Saturday, the Gaels spotted McGill a 6-2 halftime lead, and mounted a late fourth-quarter comeback that fell a goal short. Matt Eriksen led Queen's with five points (3G, 2A), while Mitch Grant, Andrew Stefannelli, Alex Wright and Brendan Zoehner scored two goals each. On Sunday, the Gaels trailed 4-3 at halftime, but the Gaels tied the game at 4-4 in the third quarter. The game was tied 6-6 at the end of regulation, and Bishop's scored with nine seconds left in overtime to dash the Gaels' hopes. Wright had four points (2G, 2A) to lead the Gaels.
UP NEXT: The Gaels host Concordia, an expansion team, on Friday on the West Campus Field, and visit Peterborough on Saturday night. Both games are set for 7 p.m. starts.
 
LACROSSE (W): The Gaels hosted the second weekend of OUA play this weekend at Tindall Field, and got off to a great start by beating their old rivals from the University of Toronto 14-5 on Saturday. Sarah Goldspink led the Gaels with six goals, while Teresa Mayo and Marsha Cryderman added three each. On Sunday, the Gaels lost 9-8 to Guelph, but rebounded to dump the McGill Martlets 20-5. In other games on Saturday, McMaster beat UOIT 16-1, Guelph shut out Toronto 13-0, Laurier downed McMaster 10-2, and Guelph beat UOIT 15-1. On Sunday, McMaster tied Laurier in a 6-6 game and Laurier beat McGill 17-7.
UP NEXT: The Gaels will play a doubleheader next Saturday, they will take on Toronto first (11:45 am) before playing Guelph later that day (4:45 pm).  
 
SAILING: The Gaels finished third in the Princeton Women's Fall Open this past weekend with 100 points. The Gaels also finished tenth out of 15 teams in the North Fall #1 with 234 points. A full recap of the Princeton regatta is available here.
UP NEXT: The Gaels will host the Queen's Open next Saturday.
 
WATER POLO (M): The Queen's Men's Water Polo team started their season at the Carleton Invitational on Saturday. Results are unavailable at this time.

WATER POLO (W): The Queen's Women's Water Polo team started their season this weekend at the Ottawa Invitational on Sunday. Results are unavailable at this time.

ULTIMATE (W): Women's Ultimate competed in the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championship this past weekend in Kingston. The Queen's Women Team A beat Waterloo 9-4, while Team B lost to Ottawa 15-1 and Western 13-1. The Women's Team A won their second game 11-3 against Carleton, but lost their third game against Ottawa 8-6. On Sunday the women competed in the quarter finals against McMaster and won 11-3. The Gaels lost in the semi-finals 10-6, after being down 8-1 in the first half, they came back hard in the second half with 5 more points. The women competed in a consolation final against Western which they 10-8, to come in third overall.

ULTIMATE (M): Men's Ultimate team also competed on Saturday, winning their first game against Western 13-4, they followed this win up with two more: 13-6 over York and 13-7 over McMaster. On Sunday, the Gaels took on Carleton in a quarter final match, they won the game 12-8 and advanced to the semi-finals where they met McGill. The Gaels lost to McGill 12-10 in a close game. They played Waterloo in the consolation finals, winning the game 13-8 to give them an overall third place in the CEUUC.
