VARSITY CLUBS THIS WEEK:
BASEBALL: The Gaels are coming off a very busy week that included five games in five days. On Wednesday the Gaels defeated McMaster 17-14 in Hamilton. Andrew Hastings hit a home run and Matt Reagan picked up the save. Friday's makeup game at Laurier was postponed again. The Gaels lost both games at Guelph, 12-2 and 6-5. Graham Skelhorne-Gross and Jamie Carter both had 2 hits in Game 2. The Gaels split the doubleheader with Waterloo on Sunday. Queen's fell 10-2 in the opener and won the second game 7-3. James Carter went 3-3 in game 2 and Jacob Zilli hit a home run.
UP NEXT: The Gaels play host to McMaster on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Toronto on Sunday (12 noon) at Megaffin Park.
CYCLING: The Queen's Cycling Team had their first of four race weekends this season as part of the University Cup Series at Mansfield Outdoor Centre. Saturday included two different races: crit and time trial. Sunday had one endurance race. Overall podium finishes for the weekend were the following. In the Men's A,
Etienne Moreau finished second, followed by James Clarke who finished third. In the Men's B, Hank Jien placed first and Brad Parsons finished second. In the Women's B, Jess Metuzals finished first place. Overall, Queen's is ahead in the series so far and with race three weekends to go for the season, the Gaels look good.
UP NEXT: The second race of the University Cup Series takes place this weekend.
FASTPITCH: The Gaels hosted a pair of doubleheaders at Garrigan Park this past weekend. On Saturday they fell to Brock both games, 10-0 and 14-7. On Sunday, Queen's turned it around and won both games against McMaster, 9-2 and 15-3.
UP NEXT: The Gaels are on the road this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders against Guelph on Saturday (2 p.m.) and in Toronto (12 noon) at Syntex Green Park on Sunday.
FIELD HOCKEY: The Gaels got off to a slow start to open regular season play this past weekend in Waterloo. They fell to Western, 2-1 on Saturday, with the lone goal from forward Amber Halcovitch (Apsley, Ont.) and a 0-7 loss to Toronto on Sunday.
UP NEXT: The Gaels continue regular season play as they travel to Toronto for three games this weekend at Varsity Stadium. On Saturday (12:30 p.m.) they play Guelph followed by a doubleheader on Sunday against York (9:00 a.m.) and McGill (2:15 p.m.).
GOLF: Both Queen's Golf teams traveled to Ottawa this past Saturday for the Carleton Invitational at The Marshes Golf Club. Facing a difficult course, wind and rain, the men's squad finished fourth out of the eight teams that were competing with an aggregate total of 319. Landing in a three-way tie for first place in the individual, Russell Bowie, who shot a well-earned 74 with Taylor Henderson coming in at 77, followed by Echo Chan (79), Matt LaRiviere (89), Drew Barvir (89), and Alex Jardine (92). However, the Gaels had a triumphant homecoming as they took gold at the Queen's Invitational at Amherstview, despite the loss of team captain Taylor Henderson due to illness. Once again, Russell Bowie shot the team's best score (68), this time winning the individual gold. Bowie was followed by Echo Chan (70), Matt LaRiviere (73), Drew Barvir (73), and Justin Gilman (78) for a combined total of 284.
UP NEXT: The Gaels hit the road this Thursday for the Western Invitational at the St. Thomas Golf & Country Club.
LACROSSE (M): The Gaels were off this week. They return to action this weekend as they visit McGill and Bishop's.
LACROSSE (W): The Gaels were at Western this past weekend for their first tournament of the year. On Saturday, the Gaels suffered losses to Laurier 6-13 and Western 3-14. On Sunday, Queen's defeated UOIT 14-1. Three players scored hat-tricks for the Gaels in the big win: Marsha Cryderman (Bowmanville, Ont.), Sarah Goldspink (Mississauga, Ont.) and Teresa Mayo.
UP NEXT: The Gaels host the second tournament of the season this weekend at home on Tindall Field. Queen's plays Toronto on Saturday (9:45 a.m.) and Guelph (9:45 a.m.) and McGill (1:15 p.m.) on Sunday.
SAILING: The Gaels finished 20th of 20 teams at the Nevin's Trophy event in King's Point, N.Y. with 961 points, 205 points behind 19th-place the King's Point Mariners.
