No. 10 Gaels eliminated in double OT loss to Lions

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 19, 2012) – The No. 10 Queen's Gaels (1-2) and York Lions (2-1) needed extra time to decide a winner in the final game of their best-of-three OUA playoff series where Chloe Milano of Maple, Ont. played hero scoring 6:41 into the second overtime period giving the Lions the victory.

Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont. got the start for the Gaels making 27 saves while Megan Lee of Orillian, Ont. made her third start of the series for York, finishing with 38 saves for the win.

The Gaels were led by Alex Cieslowski of Oakville, Ont. who had one goal and one helper while York's Milano had a two goal effort.

The Lions were the first to strike at the 3:02 mark of the first period, Andrea Joyce of Mississauga, Ont. spun around a Gaels defender and found a wide-open Milano who beat Dodd-Moher her second goal of the playoffs.

The lead did not last long however, as off the face-off Queen's got the puck into the Lions zone and scored just 23 seconds after the Milano goal. Cieslowski was given credit for the goal after the Gaels stormed the York net and Cieslowski put home a loose puck for her first of the playoffs. Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont. got the lone assist on the goal.

The Gaels took their first lead of the game at the 2:25 mark in the second period, Morgan had a shot blocked that went to the stick of Brittany McHaffie of Guelph, Ont. who then fired a shot at the pads of Lee. Morgan grabbed the rebound and tucked away the goal, her second of the playoffs. Brittany and Cieslowski added the assists for Queen's.

The Lions charged back and Rebecca Bond of Sudbury, Ont. fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Dodd-Moher just three minutes and 21 seconds after the Gaels took the lead.

Both teams tightened up defensively and the two goalies continued to shine despite the numerous shots faced in the game. After no scoring in the third, Lee had turned aside 35 shots already in the game while Dodd-Moher stopped 23 before overtime. Queen's went 0-1 on the power play in the period while York was 0-1.

After only four total shots in the first overtime and no real chances, York broke down the Gaels in the second overtime.  After Dodd-Moher made an initial save, Gaels defenders blocked multiple shots from York at an open net. The puck found its way to Milano who chipped the puck over Dodd-Moher for the win.

York will now move on to face the Western Mustangs.
