BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – A frenzy of three-pointers in the second quarter helped the Queen's Gaels to win their second OUA game of the season is as many starts, as they downed the Waterloo Warriors, 83-63, at the ARC Main Gym, Sunday. The Gaels fell behind early in the first quarter, however their consistent shooting and patient offensive playmaking gave them a large lead for the second half. With the win, the Gaels improve to 2-0 in league play (8-7 overall, 6-4 vs. CIS) - the first time since 2004-05 that they have started the regular season with a pair of victories
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) kick-started things for the Gaels in the second quarter, knocking down seven points, including a three-point play.
James Asefa (Toronto, Ont.) knocked down back-to-back threes to cap a Gaels 13-0 run and give them a 27-18 lead. The Gaels were also effective down low, including a
Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto, Ont.) under the hoop basket, followed by a Faulkner slam to get the crowd in the game. Queen's continued their dominance from beyond the arc with
Andrew Mavety (Vancouver, B.C.) notching two, and
Mackenzie Simpson (Ottawa, Ont.),
Mark Paclibar (Minesing, Ont.) and
Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) each hitting one to close out the half—giving the Gaels a 42-24 lead. Waterloo had an early 11-8 lead, but the Gaels oustcored the Warriors 34-13 from that point on.
The second half featured consistent play for the Gaels, who kept even with Waterloo in scoring throughout the third quarter, helping to solidify their large lead. The Gaels continued dominating in the fourth quarter, outscoring Waterloo 24-21 to add an exclamation mark to their victory. Queen's had the better percentages from the field, shooting 39%; and 37% from three-point range. Waterloo was 37% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc.
The Gaels outrebounded Waterloo 55-32, including 34-5 on the Waterloo offensive glass, allowing Queen's to limit Waterloo to only four second-chance points.
Faulkner picked up a double-double for the Gaels, with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Simpson was the only other Gael in double figures, with 14 points. Singh had a strong all-around game, with seven points, nine rebounds and six assists.
The Gaels are next in action on Friday, as they visit the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
