KINGSTON, Ont. - Jen Farrow's goal with 37 seconds left gave the Queen's Gaels an 8-7 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the bronze-medal match of the 2012 OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship at Tindall Field, Sunday. The Brampton, Ont., found the net after Laurier had tied the game 12 seconds earlier.
Teresa Mayo (Orillia, Ont.) led the Gaels with three goals, including two second-half markers, while Sarah Goldspink (Oakville, Ont.), Lina Teichmann (Roetgen, Germany), Mary-Michelle Bolland (Mississauga, Ont.) and Farrow each scored one.
For Laurier, Krissy Leeder (Whitby, Ont.) led with three goals, while Jen Taylor (Whitby, Ont.), Jory Garibaldi (Kitchener, Ont.), Sarah Stanley (Whitby, Ont.) and Shelby O'Ryan (Burlington, Ont.) scored once each.
Laurier opened the game with goals by Leeder and Taylor in the first ten minutes, before the Gaels came back with four unanswered to take a 4-2 halftime lead.
Queen's extended their lead to 5-2 off Bolland's goal only 94 seconds into the second half. Laurier came back with four straight goals to take the lead back at 6-5 with 13:39 remaining. However, Mayo tied the game back up with 13:12 to go, and put Queen's up 7-6 at the 4:50 mark. Leeder tied the game for Laurier with 49 seconds left before Farrow's marker ensured the hosts would leave the tournament with a medal.
Queen's was in the bronze medal game as a result of their 15-10 loss to Western, the eventual tournament champions, in a thriller on Saturday evening.
The Mustangs ran out to a 9-3 halftime lead, but Queen's fought back to tie the game at 10-10 with 15:40 to play. However, the Mustangs scored five unanswered goals to deny the hosts' hopes of an upset. Tawnie Johnson led Western with five goals, while Tenyka Snider scored three, and Michelle Farrugia and Tasha MacDonald each added a pair. Singles from Jesse Porter, Maddy Crowther and Becca Watson rounded out Western's scoring. For Queen's, Marsha Cryderman (Bowmanville, Ont.) led with three goals, while Farrow and Goldspink scored a pair. Singles by Murielle Landry (Kingston, Ont.) and Mayo, along with an own goal, rounded out the Gaels scoring.
The Gaels defeated McMaster 9-5 to advance to the semifinals. Mayo, Teichmann and Cryderman each scored twice for the Gaels, who led 5-3 at halftime. Goals by Farrow, Goldspink, Bolland rounded out the Queen's scoring.
Western won the provincial championship with a 12-7 defeat of Guelph in the final game. The U of T Varsity Blues won the consolation side with a 10-6 win over McMaster in the fifth-place game.
