BOX SCORE TORONTO, Ont. – The Queen's Gaels defeated the Ryerson Rams 5-3 in OUA men's hockey action at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Friday night. The game was Ryerson's first in their newly-renovated arena, in the former Maple Leaf Gardens.
The Gaels took an early lead with a goal scored by
Andrew Wiebe (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and assisted by
Steve Schmidt (Campbell River, B.C.) at 1:30. Queen's added another goal at 13:47 scored by
Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) and assisted by
Jordan Mirwaldt (Winnipeg, Man.) and
Patrick McGillis (Calgary, Alta.). Steve Taylor (Sudbury, Ont.) replied for the Rams at 16:20, assisted by Mark Corbett and Michael Fine bringing the score to 2-1. The Gaels quickly regained their two-goal lead 25 seconds later as McGillis scored a goal assisted by
Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.).
Ryerson played a predominantly offensive game in the second period putting up 14 shots, but were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. The Gaels scored at 15:22 with a goal by
Jordan Soquila (Maple Ridge, B.C.) assisted by
Brock Ouellet (Lindsay, Ont.) and
Jesse Ferras (Ottawa, Ont.) bringing the score to 4-1 after 40 minutes.
The Rams got off to a quick start in the third period with a short-handed goal scored by Greg Payne (Thornhill, Ont.) at 2:57. Ryerson added a power play goal at 9:19 scored by Mark Corbett (Burlington, Ont.) leaving the Gaels advantage to just one goal at 4-3. However, the Gaels were able to maintain their lead and
Taylor Clements (Toronto, Ont.) added an empty net goal at 18:53 to put the game out of reach.
Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) had 45 saves for the Gaels, who were outshot 48-26. Troy Passingham (Mississauga, Ont.) had 11 saves in the first period, while Steve Gleeson (Toronto, Ont.) added another 11 in the second and third period for the Rams.
The Gaels move to 2-0 in the regular season, while the Rams move to 1-2.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, October 20, as they play the U of T Varsity Blues at the Varsity Centre in Toronto. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
