Varsity Clubs update - Oct. 15, 2012

VARSITY CLUBS UPDATE:
 
CYCLING: The Queen's Cycling won their second straight University Cup, after the fourth and final race of the season at Ganaraska, near Peterborough, Sunday. The Gaels finished with 1682 points, nearly 650 ahead of their nearest competitor, the U of T Varsity Blues. Etienne Moreau finished second in the men's A event, while James Clarke was fourth. They also finished Haley Smith won the women's race, while Victoria Giangrade finished fifth, good enough to win the overall series title. In the men's B race, Brad Parsons won for the Gaels, while Hank Jien was seventh, and won the overall series title. Jess Metuzals led the Gaels in the women's B race with a fourth place.
 
FASTPITCH: The Gaels hosted the undefeated Western Mustangs on Saturday, and suffered a pair of losses, 16-1 and 15-2. Sunday's scheduled doubleheader against Windsor was rained out and will not be made up. The Gaels conclude the regular season with a 9-11 record, and finish in eighth place in the OIWFA.
UP NEXT: The Gaels head to the OIWFA Championship this weekend in London, Ont.
 
FIELD HOCKEY: The Gaels suffered a pair of losses last weekend, 5-0 to Guelph, and 9-0 to Toronto in Downsview, Ont. The Gaels are 1-8 in league play, seven points back of York, who hold the fifth and final OUA playoff spot.
UP NEXT: The Gaels host the league's final weekend of play, Saturday and Sunday at Tindall Field. Action starts at 9 a.m. both days, with Queen's facing Waterloo on Saturday at 9 a.m., Western on Sunday at 9 a.m. and McGill at 12:30 p.m.

LACROSSE (M): The Gaels split their two games last weekend against the Carleton Ravens. On Saturday at the West Campus Field, the Gaels fell 13-12 in overtime to the Ravens. The teams were tied 11-11 after regulation, but two Carleton goals early in extra time gave the visitors the win. The Gaels extracted a measure of revenge the next day, defeating the Ravens 13-5 in Ottawa.
UP NEXT: On Saturday, the Gaels (3-5) host Trent in a 5:30 p.m. start on the West Campus Field. On Sunday, they close out the regular season with a trip to Concordia.
 
WATER POLO (M): The Gaels played four games at the U of T Fall Classic over the weekend. In Game 1, the Gaels downed Western 11-8. James Bickerton, Ziv Deutsch and Trevor Robinson scored three each, while Charles McClintock made 12 saves. In Game 2, the Gaels defeated York 11-4. Deutsch led Queen's with five goals, while Robinson had three. McClintock had 11 saves, including one off a penalty shot. The Gaels fell, 9-8, to the London Senior men's team in Game 3. Bickerton, Deutsch and Hugh Ragan each scored twice. In the tournament's final game, the Gaels fell 18-6 to Toronto, with Bickerton's hat trick leading the Gaels. Overall, the Gaels are 3-6, and 3-3 vs. OUA teams.
UP NEXT: The Gaels will host the Queen's Invitational from Nov. 2-4 at the ARC.
 
WATER POLO (W): The Gaels played four games at the U of T Fall Classic last weekend. In Game 1, the Gaels dispatched the Ottawa Gee-Gees 20-3, with Alex Watt and Meredith Williams scoring four goals each. Game 2 was a much tighter affair, as the Gaels scored three times in the fourth quarter to down McMaster. Judith Weist led Queen's with a hat trick. In Game 3, the Gaels again had little trouble with Ottawa, defeating the Gee-Gees 21-1. Tess Beverdige led Queen's with five goals, while Kirsten Morris had four. The Gaels fell to the host Varsity Blues in Game 4, by a 10-4 score. Shannon Craig scored two to lead the Gaels. Overall, Watt led Queen's with eight goals, while Weist was the only Gael to score in every game. The Gaels are now 4-4 overall, 3-3 vs. OUA teams.
UP NEXT: The Gaels will host the Queen's Invitational from Nov. 2-4 at the ARC.
 
SAILING: This past weekend the Queen's Sailing Team competed in two events. In the North 2 Qualifier at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Queen's finished 7th out of 15 teams qualifying for the Henry Luce Championship at the end of October. Full Results: http://scores.collegesailing.org/f12/north-fall-2-qualifier/  Also, the Queen's Sailing Team competed at the McGill Cup in Montreal and finished 3rd behind Middlebury and Tufts. Queen's was the top ranking Canadian team in this regatta which had 15 schools competing from both the United States and Canada.
UP NEXT: The Gaels are set to compete at MAISA Match Racing and the KP Dinghy Open in King's Point, N.Y. and the CICSA Team Racing Championships in Kingston.
 
SWIMMING: On Saturday, the Gaels competed at the OUA Sprint Invitational in Guelph. The Gaels' performance was highlighted by Edison Jyang and Phil Furrer, who finished second and fourth in the 50m freestyle, along with Margo Bacher, who was fourth in the 50m breaststroke. Jyang was also fourth in the 50m butterfly.
UP NEXT: The Gaels will travel to Peterborough for the Trent Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
