Gaels fall just short against Mustangs

| By:
LONDON, Ont. (January 28, 2012) - Despite a 30 save performance from Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., the Queen's Gaels (11-7-3) fell by a 2-1 score to the Western Mustangs (10-12-0) in London on Saturday.

The first period was closely contested between the two squads as the Gaels narrowly outshot the Mustangs by an 8-7 margin. Both goaltenders stood tall in the period, turning aside every shot they faced with the Gaels taking the lone power play opportunity of the period with less than a minute to play in the frame.

The Mustangs broke the deadlock late in the second period, when Toronto native Casey Rosen scored at the 14:26 mark of the frame. The Gaels were in control of the second period, outshooting the Mustangs 14-6 on the strength of three power play opportunities. Queen's couldn't solve Olivia Ross of Huntsville, Ont., who was held up the Western backend despite the edge in numbers going to the Gaels.

Queen's beat Ross early in the third period on the power play when Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., scored goal 15 of the season with the assists going to Brittany McHaffie and Alex Cieslowski of Oakville, Ont. The Mustangs restored their lead shortly after with a power play goal of their own as Stacey Scott of London, Ont., beat Dodd-Moher. The third was a high tempo, penalty filled frame as the teams combined for 31 shots on goal and eight minor penalties. Despite the power plays and shots on goals, the Gaels couldn't put one past Ross for the rest of the third and the Mustangs clinched the win.

Dodd-Moher stopped 30 of 32 Mustangs shots on goal in addition to a penalty shot early in the third period. Ross was up to the task in the Western goal and matched Dodd-Moher, as she stopped 33 of 34 Gaels shots on goal. Ross and the Western penalty kill ultimately sealed the win as they killed eight of nine Gaels power plays.

The Gaels will try to bounce back against the Windsor Lancers tomorrow when they wrap up their weekend road trip in Windsor. Puck drop is set for 4:10 pm.
