Mirwaldt, Wallace named TELUS Athletes of the Week

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 16, 2012) – Queen's Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce that men's hockey player Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg and women's basketball player Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. have been named TELUS Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 15.

Mirwaldt was a force for the Gaels in his fourth game of the season since returning from injuries. On Friday against the Concordia Stingers, Mirwaldt had a multi-point game, recording a goal and two assists in a 9-2 Gaels win. The performance from Mirwaldt helped lead the Gaels to their biggest offensive output since January 30, 2005 when they topped the Ryerson Rams by an 11-4 score. The victory over the Stingers sets the Gaels up for a late season push as they are now 3-1 since the beginning of 2012 and have played the fewest games of any team in the OUA.

Wallace started both games at home this weekend and averaged 22 minutes of playing time as she helped the Gaels defeat both the Laurentian Lady Vees and the York Lions. Against the Lady Vees Wallace posted a three point, six rebound, two steal effort to give the Gaels - who had 20 points off of turnovers and 15 points off of second chances - a boost with her multi-steal game while leading the team in offensive rebounds with four. Against the Lions, Wallace posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while falling just short of a triple-double with a team high five assists. The two wins move the Gaels into third place in the OUA East Division.
