Gaels prepare for Friday Night Lights in Toronto

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 26, 2011) - The Queen's Gaels (2-2) will look to keep their two game winning streak alive when they kick off against the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-2) under the lights at Varsity Stadium on Friday night.

Friday's game will be matchup number 173 between the Gaels and the Varsity Blues since 1887. The Varsity Blues lead the historical series, with a historical record of 88-80-4. Under head coach Pat Sheahan the Gaels have a record of 9-0 against their Toronto rivals.

The Gaels continued to build upon a strong week three performance with a week four blowout of the York Lions (1-3) in a 63-3 victory. The Gaels offence, defence and special teams all recorded touchdowns in the victory.

Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont. led the Gaels offense going 17-23 for 328 passing yards, three touchdowns and rushing for an additional touchdown which sparked the big victory. Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta. was a force rushing once again for the Gaels as he picked up 156 yards on 18 carries. Granberg had two touchdown rushes on the afternoon as he crossed the goalline on rushes from one and 50 yards away. Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C. had a career day receiving with 131 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions. Giovanni Aprile of Toronto scored his first rushing touchdown of the season from 10 yards away. With the score, Aprile has scored touchdowns receiving, rushing and returning through four weeks of the season.

The Gaels had another strong day on defence as they limited the York offence to a single field goal from 12 yards away in the fourth quarter. Stephen Laporte of Ottawa was the Gaels leading tackler with 4.5 tackles and .5 sacks. Osie Ukwuoma of Mississauga, Ont. had another strong performance against the Lions with 2.5 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception. Ukwuoma's interception was one of three for the Gaels, as Josh Sultana of Etobicoke, Ont. contributed an interception in the victory while Yann Dika-Balotoken of Toronto had the Gaels' most electrifying play on defence with a 46 yard interception which he returned for a touchdown.

Alex Carroll of Victoria was the top performer for Queen's on special teams as he returned a punt in the second quarter 70 yards for a touchdown.

Toronto enters this game looking to get back in the win column after suffering a lopsided loss on the road in Ottawa this past weekend. Despite winning back-to-back games over York and Guelph, the Varsity Blues could not sustain their momentum as they fell 41-0 to the Gee-Gees. Andrew Gillis of Markham, Ont. moved the ball through the air but had trouble protecting it as he threw for 190 yards and four interceptions. Wilkerson DeSouza of Mississauga, Ont. was Toronto's top player on defence with eight solo tackles in a losing effort. Dorian Munroe of Miami, Fla., U.S.A. has been a solid player in Toronto's defensive secondary since joining the team after playing five seasons with the Florida Gators of the NCAA.
The last meeting between these two teams was a record setting matchup for the Gaels. Justin Chapdelaine threw for six touchdowns in a 66-1 victory over Toronto in Kingston. Chapdelaine's six passing touchdowns put him first among Gaels single game leaders and eighth in CIS single game history. The win was also the 100th in Gaels head coach Pat Sheahan's head coaching career and his 52nd since coming to Queen's.

Kickoff between the Gaels and Varsity Blues is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Varsity Stadium.
